Role Overview
We are seeking a Maintenance Technician to join the Recreational Sports team in Blacksburg, Virginia. This role supports our mission by ensuring that facilities and equipment remain safe, functional, and welcoming for all users.
Key Responsibilities
Join the Recreational Sports team, a department dedicated to promoting wellbeing, physical activity, sport, and fitness through high-quality facilities and programs.
Report to the Maintenance Supervisor in a regular 12‑month, 100% staff appointment. The role is designated as essential personnel and may require reporting to work during university closures, including evenings and weekends.
Work independently to diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair cardiovascular, strength training, and electronic equipment, as well as golf carts, furniture, upholstery, masonry, carpentry, and painting needs.
Assist with general and specialized maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and security systems.
Help maintain safe, functional, and visually appealing facilities across all spaces managed by the department.
Have opportunities for professional growth through a developmental plan and potential advancement within the department and division.
Be offered a base compensation package between $45,000 and $47,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, paid leave, retirement, tuition assistance, VT discounts, and more.
Required Qualifications
Experience maintaining and repairing cardiovascular, weight training, and recreation equipment.
Experience and working knowledge of carpentry, painting, and electrical systems.
Ability to read and understand technical documents, blueprints, and publications to apply knowledge, provide accurate installation, diagnosis, and repair.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in welding, design and fabrication.
Experience in plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical systems.
Electrical Journeyman or Master Certification.
Compensation and Benefits
Pay Band: 3
Overtime Status: Non‑Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
Appointment Type: Regular
Salary Information: $45,000 – $47,000
Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm
Hours per week: 40
