Ultium Cells, LLC is a joint venture between LG Energy Solution, Ltd. and General Motors. This high‑technology plant is a new construction with the latest battery cell manufacturing technology. It is a $2.3 billion investment and will be among the largest battery cell manufacturing plants in the world. Ultium Cells will produce battery cells for General Motors’ North American electric vehicle applications.

Position Summary
Ultium Cells is seeking an exceptional candidate for an Automation Engineering position supporting battery factory automation. The role will provide engineering support for Smart Factory Systems and oversee and implement Smart Factory systems. The engineer will communicate with cross‑functional teams and individuals within the company.

Responsibilities

Review and implement applications of Smart Factory system based on the latest technology.

Project‑management and deployment of key Smart Factory systems (Remote Ops System, Autonomous Calibration, Product Traceability, Preventive Maintenance, etc.).

Participate in Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and commissioning for functionality & performance checks of installed smart factory systems.

Plan strategies to improve equipment efficiency and availability through automation (PLC) and digitalization (Python, C#).

Control Smart Factory communication channels with parent headquarters to adopt lessons learned.

Manage issues related to Smart Factory weekly/monthly reports (issues, achievements, progress).

Conduct regular cadence meetings (weekly or monthly) to discuss issues, progress and achievements of smart factory projects with parent headquarters and UL1 (Ohio) & UL2 (Tennessee) battery facilities.

Manage smart factory systems investment & operation budget.

Other duties as directed.

Required Qualifications & Competencies

Bachelor’s Degree required; engineering degrees (Electrical, Mechatronic, Computer) preferred.

In‑depth understanding of network systems & IT (0‑3 years of professional experience preferred).

Proficient in PC and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Self‑directed, able to work in a diverse workforce.

Strong accountability and enthusiastic learner for dedicated smart factory systems and foundation technologies (PLC, Machine Learning, Network, Vision inspection, etc.), with keen attention to detail.

Strong communication skills with internal and external project stakeholders.

Ability to communicate technical details verbally and in writing.

Ability to review and modify smart factory systems via Python, C#, and PLC programming (Siemens) preferred.

Strong analytical skills for root‑cause analysis and problem‑solving while managing cross‑functional teams.

Willingness and ability to work flexible hours occasionally for collaboration with different time‑zones and support manufacturing/equipment teams for system testing.

Commitment and desire to learn complex battery manufacturing processes with the goal of becoming a go‑to resource for technical problem‑solving discussions.

Bilingual skills, writing and speaking, in English and Korean required.

Preferred

Knowledge and experience of Factory Automation (PLC, Python, C#, Data Analytics incl. Feature Engineering, etc.) and Project Management (schedule & task progress management).

Knowledge and experience of Smart Factory and Factory Automation.

Knowledge in the automotive and/or battery industry and manufacturing.

IT & Network experience.
