Special Mechanic – Welder
Under the direction of the Superintendent or Foreman, a Special Mechanic – Welder is responsible for repairing NJ TRANSIT buses for maintenance work and handling welding tasks.
Responsibilities
Conduct various testing, repair, installation and maintenance tasks on equipment including engines, brake systems, suspension, steering, electronics, electrical systems, HVAC, transmission, and painting equipment.
Understand and carry out written and verbal instructions and follow established policies and procedures.
Diagnose and repair all electric I/O controls and multiplex wiring systems.
Complete wiring conversions for buses with 12 V, 24 V, 110 V and high voltage (EV buses).
Disassemble and reassemble complete electrical components with mechanical ability.
Read electrical schematics to diagnose and repair electrical faults including wiring repair.
Diagnose and repair electrical components on all computer-controlled engines and transmissions.
Troubleshoot, analyze and implement effective solutions for operational faults on hybrid vehicle systems and components.
Troubleshoot and repair all electrical components.
Use working knowledge of air conditioning and electrical systems.
Diagnose and program engines, transmissions, and other systems with a computer.
Demonstrate proper use of tools and diagnostic equipment.
Use and read parts manual and fill out required forms.
Work overtime when required.
Maintain a clean, uncluttered and safe work area; follow established shop safety policies and procedures.
Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or GED; ASE certification is a plus.
CDL license.
Five years of experience in the welding field.
Pass pre-employment physical and background checks.
Certified and able to supply copies of prior certifications; able to read blueprints, sketches, and drawings.
Willing to work overtime when required.
