General Summary
The Assistant Senior Public Safety Officer (Sergeant) is responsible for routine surveillance of healthcare premises, grounds, and buildings, while serving as a first-line supervisor within the department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and manage schedules for the Public Safety Department and assist in performance evaluations.
Provide leadership and training to subordinate officers in line with established policies and procedures.
Maintain accurate records and documentation of daily activities, rounds, and incidents in compliance with departmental standards.
Serve as an instructor and trainer to ensure the safety and protection of all individuals within the facility.
Offer supervision and guidance to Public Safety Officers, fostering a professional and supportive work environment.
Assist in crisis or emergency situations by supporting the Chief and administration with efficient and professional response efforts.
Help maintain call statistics and perform minor administrative duties as needed.
Education
Graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy is required.
Experience
Minimum of one year of road experience as a Patrol Officer or four years of active experience in Law Enforcement Detention.
Certification and License
Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association is required. Must be a commissioned law enforcement officer in good standing with the state POST Commission or have held a valid commission within the last three years.
Mental and Physical Requirements
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, perform necessary calculations, and interpret policies related to safety and security. The role requires standing, walking, sitting, and lifting. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential. Candidates must be able to manage multiple crisis situations professionally under stress and have knowledge of hospital codes and emergency procedures.
Working Conditions
This position may involve long periods of standing and walking and exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, noise, chemicals, infectious diseases, and potentially aggressive individuals. Interaction with patients, families, visitors, and staff is frequent.
