Assistant Attorney General – Juvenile Litigation (CYF Division)
The Children, Youth, and Families Division (CYF) of the Washington State Attorney General's Office has an immediate opening for an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) in its Juvenile Litigation Section.
CYF is composed of the Juvenile Litigation (JUV) Section and the Program Advice and Litigation (PAL) Section. The JUV Section represents the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) in child welfare cases across several counties, including dependency, guardianship, and termination of parental rights cases. The role involves a fast‑paced litigation workload, with weekly in‑person court appearances and frequent trials in juvenile and superior courts, as well as appellate courts and administrative hearings. The position is full‑time, based in Tumwater, and includes travel to surrounding counties.
Section’s Work
As an AAG, you will:
Represent DCYF in contested shelter‑care hearings, dependency fact‑findings, and termination of parent‑rights trials.
Appear in court frequently, develop and implement legal strategy, and pursue settlement or trial resolution.
Collaborate closely with DCYF social workers, other attorneys, and administrative staff.
Provide training and guidance to DCYF personnel on litigation matters.
Maintain high standards of ethical and professional conduct.
Qualifications
Required:
Graduated from an ABA‑accredited law school or completed the WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program.
Licensed to practice law in Washington State (or actively pursuing admission).
Commitment to public service and a demonstrated passion for child‑welfare and public law practice.
Desirable:
Strong courtroom litigation skills and stamina.
Ability to manage competing priorities and work well with diverse stakeholders.
Flexibility, empathy, and a genuine desire to serve vulnerable children.
Experience or interest in child‑welfare law.
