Calling all prospects Ages 15 years old and over!

Come work for Concord's Parks and Recreation Department this summer! Lifeguards work mid-June to late August, up to 40 hours a week. The city operates six swimming pools around the city and we need to hire almost 40 lifeguards to open all six pools.

Applicants must have valid American Red Cross Lifeguard and First Aid/CPR certifications to apply for employment.

Applicants who are hired and pass their certification classes, while working 4 or more days a week until end of season will be reimbursed the cost of the class.

JOB SUMMARY:

Applicants must be dependable, enjoy working with youth and families and have good communication and problem solving skills. Examples of Duties

Responsible for the supervision, safety and accident prevention of all patrons.

Responsible for insuring that maintenance of the pool area and facilities are cleaned on a daily basis according to established maintenance procedures.

Required to adhere to all guidelines outlined in the Pool Staff Handbook. Required to wear approved city uniforms while on duty.

Works cooperatively with other staff and \"outside groups\" that use the pool for regularly scheduled activities or special events.

Completes all required paperwork in a timely manner such as time sheets, attendance reports and maintenance reports.

Administers First Aid and CPR when necessary.

Follows established procedures regarding accidents, discipline or mechanical problems. Notifies the Parks & Recreation Assistant Director and/or Pool Supervisor immediately in the event of an unusual situation or hazardous condition.

Follows and enforces department rules and regulations.

Directs all suggestions from the public to their Supervisor. Strives to establish positive public relations for the Parks & Recreation Department and the City of Concord.

May be required to lift items that weigh more than 50 lbs. occasionally.

Lifeguards are responsible for assisting with the teaching of swim lessons.

WORK HOURS:

Must attend in-service training and staff meetings. Employees must be available to work on weekends between the hours of 10 am and 4:30 p.m. and weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Do you want to work in a fun environment while providing a safe experience for guests at the Westover Pool Complex? The Lifeguard (Year-Round) position is a part-time position (no benefits) and a preferred hiring rate of $16.12 per hour. Additional compensation will be provided to individuals with a Water Safety Instructor certification. The ideal candidates for this position will have a positive attitude and will be responsible for ensuring the general safety, health, discipline, and enjoyment of patrons at the Westover Pool Complex. Applicants who possess the required certifications from another organization and applicants who do not yet possess any/all of the required certifications will be considered and trained on American Red Cross standards if selected for the position. As a Lifeguard, you'll:
Open and close the pool, including accepting and accounting for any entry fees;
Enforce water safety and pool rules;
Provide emergency lifesaving services to swimmers in need;
Clean the pool and related facilities on a regular schedule;
Answer questions from patrons;
Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
15 years of age or older by date of hire. Current high school students are encouraged to apply.
Completion of ninth grade, required. High school diploma or GED and some experience as a lifeguard and maintaining a swimming pool, preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Current possession of (or ability to obtain prior to being assigned to the lifeguard stand) current American Red Cross certifications, including Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR-PRO. Applicants who possess the required certifications from another organization and applicants who do not yet possess any/all of the required certifications will be considered and trained on American Red Cross standards if selected for the position.
Ability to obtain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification, if needed at a later date. Employees who attain this certification after hire may be eligible for additional compensation.

Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Lifeguard include the following:
Assists with aquatic activities related to recreation programs.
Guards during recreational swim programs, including observing swimmers in the pool and surrounding area and providing emergency response, as needed.
Assists with inspecting facilities and equipment for safety, maintenance, and cleanliness and ensures compliance with administrative and safety policies, procedures, and protocols.
Maintains accurate records and reports.
Performs general maintenance and repairs on facilities and equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines

Requirements Ability to establish, foster, and maintain positive, harmonious working relationships with other employees, officials, and the public. Desirable Valid American Red Cross certifications:
Lifeguard Training, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and First Aid for the professional rescuer or equivalent
Licenses, Certifications and Training Ability to obtain valid American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguard Training, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and First Aid for the professional rescuer or equivalent within three (3) months of employment. Special Requirements Must be at least 15 years of age at time of appointment (hire). Ability to work various schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. NOTE: If your application is accepted, you will be invited to participate in an assessment process, which will include an interview and swim test. Assessment dates and additional details regarding the assessment process will be provided at a later date. All potential hires are required to pass a fingerprint review, pre-employment physical examination and TB test.

Lifeguard Training The following American Red Cross certifications are required continuously throughout employment and must be obtained within three (3) months of employment. Failure to obtain the required certifications may result in termination of employment.

If you do not already possess the required certifications above, the City of Ontario provides Lifeguard Training courses to assist you on your way to becoming an aquatic professional.
NOTE: Successful completion of water safety courses and all required tests does not guarantee employment with the City of Ontario.
Participants must meet the following requirements:
Be 15 years old prior to the final class session
Ability to swim 300 yards with a combination of breaststroke and front crawl
Ability to pick up a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7 feet and swim 25 yards with it
Attend all classes - NO EXCEPTIONS!
Participants receive access to the online instruction upon enrollment in the Lifeguard Training course and are required to pass all modules and submit completion to the Instructor prior to the final exam.
