seeks an experienced Surety Manager, UW Specialty. This role focuses on Small Commercial Accounts and Transactional Surety, managing a book of business, building agency relationships, and leading a team in the West region.

Position Overview
Underwrites, manages, and coaches a team of underwriters in the assigned territory. Provides oversight on day‑to‑day underwriting, collaborates with underwriting assistants, and mentors staff to sustain a high‑performing workforce.

In This Role You Will
Technical Underwriting

Apply advanced underwriting concepts such as risk selection, exposure identification, coverage implications, and loss analysis.

Interpret pricing components and rating methodology, correlating pricing to exposure, finance, and competition.

Adhere to underwriting guidelines to minimize exposure and price appropriately.

Identify root cause of issues and propose solutions.

Participate in referrals and consultations from UAs and UWs within the territory.

Portfolio & Sales Management

Review key metrics, uncover trends, and identify new business opportunities with agents.

Understand how changes in business strategies affect financial results.

Stay current on state/territory regulations and market trends.

Coach and mentor the territory team, driving actions toward business objectives.

Manage agency functions for the personal book of business and participate in key new business and renewals.

Ensure the team adheres to underwriting best practices and claim handling guidelines.

Leadership & Coaching

Manage underwriters, coach, and mentor to align with business objectives.

Work with the Director or AVP on team leadership, performance coaching, talent hiring, and development.

Conduct training sessions on Small Commercial Surety and Transactional Surety topics.

Drive underwriting quality through the self‑review process.

Collaborate with Operations to execute best practices and optimize productivity.

Identify and develop talent pipelines.

Demonstrate consistent commitment to improving team performance.

What You Need to Apply

Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent education and surety experience; professional designations are strongly preferred.

Minimum 7+ years underwriting broad commercial surety bonds and building agency relationships with profitable new and renewal business.

Change advocate, open to new ideas.

Effective problem solver, who anticipates and analyzes issues to propose solutions.

High degree of commercial surety and marketplace knowledge.

Excellent communication skills: face‑to‑face, group presentations, phone and written communication.

Ability to coach and develop others.

Collaborative and influential across levels in senior and field management.

Analytical thinking, influencing others, results orientation, agile and adaptive, talent management.
