Lifeguard Position

The City of Martinez Recreation Department is looking for highly motivated people who will rise to the challenge of protecting and educating their community through lifeguard services. If you have experience with kids, are a confident swimmer, like working outdoors and you want to obtain a higher knowledge of CPR and First Aid this is the job for you. This is a part-time temporary seasonal position and hours may vary.
Under immediate supervision, monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of aquatic complexes to ensure the safety of patrons; learns, explains, and enforces safe aquatic program and pool policies, regulations, and rules; performs rescues and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as needed; and performs related work as required.
This position does require possession of an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification at time of hire. You may take an American Red Cross Lifeguard class through the Recreation division. Classes are offered as follows (insert lifeguard class flyer)
Receives direct or general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May exercise technical and functional direction and provide training to other staff.

Representative Duties

Examples of typical functions (illustrative only):
Provides aquatic safety and supervision for patrons; monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of City aquatic complexes to prevent accidents, and to ensure the safety and well-being of patrons.
Administers first aid and provides emergency care as required, maintains a safe aquatic environment and facility.
Greets the public, responds to patrons' questions and inquiries.
Keeps records and reports.
Implements and monitors City policies and procedures; enforces aquatics regulations; cautions patrons regarding unsafe activities.
Assists with cleaning and routine maintenance of the aquatic facility, including locker rooms, guard office, pool surfaces, and other facility-related duties as assigned.
Presents and maintains a professional appearance and demeanor, including wearing appropriate uniform or attire for the position and exhibiting respect and enthusiasm as duties and responsibilities are carried out.
Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.
Inspects and maintains swimming and pool equipment for functionality, ensures proper placement and availability in the pool area, and recommends maintenance and repair as needed.
Maintains pool and restroom areas in a safe and clean condition.
Maintains logs and records of activities.
Participates in required training sessions, including safety drills and other emergency procedures.
Assists with City special events as needed.
Provides feedback regarding program goals, objectives, and activity schedules to the public, participants or supervisors.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Education/Experience

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Must be a minimum of 15 years old and undergo appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting including documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years.
Licenses and Certifications: At the option of the City, persons hired into this class may be required to either possess at entry or obtain within specified time limits designated licenses, certificates or specialized education and training relevant to the area of assignment. Additional requirements may include, but are not limited to:
Current American Red Cross certifications or equivalent in Lifeguard Training
First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguard
