Position Overview
KU’s Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support offers a portfolio of collaborative, innovative academic support programs and services to students, faculty, and staff. The Wingspan provides individual and group support through its Peer Academic Coaching program, Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, Tutoring Services, and Writing Center Services. It is a part of the University Academic Support Centers (UASC), a comprehensive student support program designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas.
Job Description
Lead Writing Consultants are current writing consultants who serve as peer leaders and educators. They support programming, training, and administrative needs within Writing Center Services, including presenting workshops, facilitating writing groups, serving as embedded writing consultants, leading CDG facilitator meetings, and performing administrative tasks. Responsibilities vary by semester and are distributed equitably among lead writing consultants.
- Writing Groups: Facilitate weekly accountability writing groups for undergraduate students.
- Embedded Writing Consultants: Attend and support co‑requisite English pathways courses (English 1W) by leading short presentations, participating in in‑class activities, holding drop‑in consulting time, and providing dedicated writing consultations.
- CDG Facilitators: Plan and facilitate biweekly meetings with small groups of writing consultants, leading discussions on writing and learning center theory and practice as well as issues and ideas encountered in the course of their work.
- Workshops: Lead prepared writing workshops for undergraduate courses on campus.
- Administrative: Conduct consultant observations and check‑ins, develop resources, and assist with other training and administrative tasks as needed.
Duties And Responsibilities
- 40%: Conduct Writing Consultations
- Facilitate and foster student learning by asking questions, collaborating with writers during consultations, and teaching important writing strategies and concepts.
- Contribute to the creation of a welcoming and collaborative environment for learning.
- 50%: Provide Additional Writing Center Services
- Serve as an embedded writing consultant in English pathways courses during select semesters.
- Plan and facilitate bi‑weekly consultant development group meetings during select semesters.
- Facilitate writing groups for undergraduate students during select semesters.
- Lead writing workshops and assist with marketing events.
- Conduct consultant observations, complete observation reports, and assist with mid‑semester check‑in meetings.
- Assist with additional training and administrative tasks as needed.
- 5%: Participate in Professional Development
- Participate in pre‑service training and ongoing education, trainings, and professional development.
- Participate in committees and special projects, bringing ideas, interests, and skills to expand the collective knowledge and abilities of the Wingspan.
- 5%: Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Undergraduate student at KU, enrolled in at least six credit hours.
- Currently employed as an undergraduate writing consultant with the Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support.
- Demonstrated effective consultation practices through observations and client surveys.
- Strong communication skills through public speaking, writing, and listening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Worked in the Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support for at least two semesters.
- Previous experience in leadership roles.
- A Federal Work‑Study (FWS) award for the academic year.
Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than six credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must either have been enrolled in no less than six hours in the past spring semester or be pre‑enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than six hours, or be enrolled in summer session, or be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Employment Conditions
- This is an hourly
on‑exempt position. A student employee cannot concurrently hold an hourly
on‑exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA). - Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
Benefits
Advertised Salary Range: $13.00/hr
