Communications Director

A national, membership-based organization is seeking a Director of Communications to lead its communications, marketing, and content strategy. This role will oversee a multi-channel communications function, including digital, print, social media, and editorial content, with a focus on strengthening brand presence, growing audience engagement, and supporting membership growth. The Director will partner closely with executive leadership and present strategic plans to a board of directors, ensuring alignment between communications efforts and organizational priorities.

Responsibilities

Develop and execute a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy across digital, print, and social channels.

Lead and mentor a communications team, providing direction on content development, storytelling, and brand consistency.

Oversee editorial strategy, including written content, publications, and feature storytelling, ensuring high-quality and engaging output.

Manage and evolve social media strategy, including content planning, scheduling, and audience engagement.

Guide cross-channel campaigns that integrate digital, print, and media outreach efforts.

Partner with internal teams to refine messaging, improve communication effectiveness, and enhance overall brand positioning.

Lead initiatives to refresh website content and digital presence, improving user experience and engagement.

Collaborate with creative resources, including marketing and photography, to deliver cohesive and compelling content.

Present annual communications, marketing, and advertising plans to executive leadership and the board, including budget allocation and strategic priorities.

Identify opportunities to grow membership, expand audience reach, and attract new demographics.

Support event-related communications and media coverage as needed.

Monitor performance metrics and adjust strategies to improve reach, engagement, and overall effectiveness.

Qualifications

8+ years of progressive experience in communications, marketing, or public relations, with prior leadership experience.

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.

Background in membership organizations, associations, sports, agriculture, or similar environments strongly preferred.

Strong storytelling ability with experience developing engaging content across multiple platforms.

Hands‑on experience managing social media strategy and execution.

Experience leading cross-channel communications strategies, including both digital and print media.

Experience presenting to executive leadership or boards and managing budgets.

Proven ability to lead and develop teams, particularly in environments with early-career talent.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across functions.

Creative thinker who can bring new ideas, challenge existing approaches, and drive continuous improvement.
