Technical Writer
Overview
We are seeking a Technical Writer to support the development and maintenance of automotive mechanical service information and technical service procedures. This role will work closely with engineering, design, and manufacturing teams to create accurate, user-friendly technical documentation supporting a variety of vehicle systems and components.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical writing capabilities, experience interpreting engineering data, and the ability to collaborate across global teams in a fast-paced automotive environment.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Documentation Development
Develop and author mechanical service procedures and related technical content for:
Chassis systems
HVAC systems
Powertrain components
Interior systems
Exterior systems
Body systems
Edit and revise existing service information and technical content as required
Organize and maintain publication content by:
Section
Subsection
Information type
Create clear, accurate, and standardized technical documentation for service and repair procedures
Engineering & Data Collaboration
Work closely with Design and Process Technology teams to resolve engineering math data availability issues
Utilize engineering math data and digital mockups to support procedure development
Coordinate globally to resolve content ownership and documentation alignment across various GM organizations
Support product improvements, methods improvements, and cost reduction initiatives
Technical Tools & Systems
Use Teamcenter and Vis Mockup to generate graphics and illustrations from engineering math data
Develop procedural text and documentation using Arbortext
Create and maintain reusable text strings and standardized content where applicable
Support publication and content management activities
Cross-Functional Support
Communicate effectively with internal teams, suppliers, and external customer organizations
Provide technical guidance and direction to support personnel as needed
Collaborate with cross-functional departments to support ongoing programs and initiatives
Stay current on emerging technologies, tools, and industry best practices
Required Qualifications
Experience developing technical documentation or service procedures in a manufacturing or automotive environment
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical data
Experience working with:
Teamcenter
Arbortext
CAD or digital mockup tools
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
Experience collaborating with engineering and cross-functional teams
Preferred Qualifications
Automotive industry experience
Experience supporting mechanical or vehicle service documentation
Familiarity with:
Vis Mockup
Engineering math data
Product lifecycle management (PLM) systems
Experience working within global engineering or documentation environments
Background supporting technical publications or service information systems
