Charlotte Museum of History – Media and Communications Manager

Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Media and Communications Manager (MCM) is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the museum’s digital and print communications strategy. This position oversees all social media platforms, manages the museum website, coordinates media relations and press releases, and produces visually compelling content to support the museum’s mission and programs. The MCM ensures consistent, accurate, and brand-aligned messaging across all channels and plays a key role in expanding audience reach and strengthening community engagement.


The ideal candidate is a skilled communicator with graphic design skills, strong organizational abilities, and a collaborative work style. This position works closely with staff across departments to elevate the museum’s visibility, promote exhibitions and programs, and advance institutional priorities.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Social Media Management

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive social media strategy that promotes exhibitions, programs, initiatives, and institutional priorities.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of all museum social media platforms, including content creation, copywriting, scheduling, posting, monitoring, and community engagement.
  • Produce high-quality graphics and visual content aligned with brand guidelines.
  • Provide real-time coverage of museum events and activities.
  • Track platform trends, monitor analytics, and prepare regular performance reports with recommendations.


Website Management

  • Maintain and update the museum’s website to ensure timely, accurate, and accessible content.
  • Coordinate with staff to write, edit, and publish web content that supports exhibitions, programs, and institutional updates.
  • Ensure website usability, functionality, and compliance with digital accessibility standards.
  • Coordinate more technical maintenance needs with contracted support.

 

Press & Media Relations

  • Draft, edit, and distribute official museum press releases.
  • Maintain media contact lists and support press outreach and inquiries.
  • Coordinate with museum leadership on public relations strategies, including crisis communications when needed.


Graphic Design & Print Coordination

  • Design and produce digital and printed marketing materials, including brochures, flyers, postcards, advertisements, signage, and campaign assets.
  • Ensure consistent application of brand standards across all media.
  • Manage digital asset storage and maintain organized archives of design files.


Cross-Departmental Collaboration

  • Partner with curatorial, education, development, and visitor experience teams to develop content that reflects the museum’s mission and priorities.
  • Support fundraising, membership, and marketing campaigns with cohesive messaging and visual assets.
  • Contribute to institutional initiatives that enhance visitor experience and community outreach.


REQUIREMENTS


Required

  • 3–5 years of experience in social media management, digital communications, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience creating content across major social media platforms.
  • Strong writing, editing, storytelling, and communication skills.
  • Experience with CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress, Squarespace) and email marketing software (e.g., Constant Contact, MailChimp).
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills; ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively.


Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Digital Media, Graphic Design, or related field.
  • Proficiency in graphic design; strong skills in Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
  • Experience in museums, cultural organizations, nonprofits, or educational institutions.
  • Familiarity with analytics tools and data-driven decision-making.
