The Communications Manager leads the development and execution of strategic communications that elevate Plastic Ocean Project’s mission, programs, and impact. This role is responsible for crafting compelling narratives, managing digital platforms, and ensuring consistent, mission-driven messaging across all channels. The ideal candidate is a creative storyteller, highly organized, and passionate about environmental conservation and community engagement.
This position plays a vital role in amplifying Plastic Ocean Project’s voice, growing community engagement, and inspiring action toward reducing plastic pollution. Through strategic storytelling and digital outreach, the Communications Manager helps connect people to the mission and drive meaningful environmental change.
Key Responsibilities
Content Creation & Storytelling
Develop and manage engaging content across social media, newsletters, website, and marketing materials
Write compelling captions, campaigns, and long-form storytelling that highlight organizational impact
Translate complex environmental issues into accessible, inspiring messaging
Capture and share stories from events, cleanups, volunteers, and community initiatives
Plan, schedule, and execute social media content calendars
Monitor engagement, trends, and analytics to optimize performance each month
Maintain brand voice and consistency across all digital platforms
Create visual content concepts including reels, carousels, and campaign graphics
Event & Program Communications
Promote events such as cleanups, fundraisers, educational programs, and community initiatives
Provide real-time or post-event coverage through social media and recap content
Collaborate with program teams to highlight impact and participation and community
Intern Coordination & Support
Guide and support communications interns in content creation and project execution
Delegate tasks and provide feedback to ensure high-quality output
Foster a positive and educational environment for student involvement
Assist in developing partnerships and community relationships through communications efforts
Support media outreach, press materials, and public-facing messaging
Ensure consistent representation of the organization’s mission and values
Brand & Messaging Management
Maintain cohesive branding across all communication channels
Ensure messaging aligns with organizational goals and campaigns
Contribute to long-term communications strategy and campaign planning
Qualifications
2+ years of experience in communications, social media management, or related role
Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills
Experience managing social media platforms and content planning tools
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects
Basic graphic design or video editing skills
Passion for environmental conservation and community-driven work
Preferred Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Environmental Studies, or related field (or equivalent experience)
Experience with nonprofit communications
Photography or content capture experience
Familiarity with email marketing platforms and analytics tools
