Public Engagement Specialist

The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TP&M) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City’s streets. The Public Engagement Specialist supports the division’s Vision Zero safety initiatives and public outreach strategy.

Responsibilities

Develop outreach plans for Street Improvement Projects (SIPs).

Communicate with the public at large and circulate informational and educational materials.

Assist in workshops and staff events.

Conduct targeted education campaigns.

Synthesize outreach efforts through data analysis and deliverables.

Report on all relevant project‑related activities.

Lead merchant surveys assessing loading and delivery needs along commercial corridors.

Conduct intercept surveys at static positions within project areas.

Minimum Qualifications

Baccalaureate degree and two years of community work or related experience, or

High school graduation and six years of community work or related experience, or

Education or experience equivalent to either of the previous options, with at least one year of experience as described in option one.

Preferred Skills

Experience in customer service, public communication, and conflict resolution.

Ability to speak Spanish, Chinese, or another language.

Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; knowledge of Adobe Suite and GIS is a plus.

Valid New York driver’s license with no restrictions.

Other Requirements

Must maintain a valid New York driver’s license throughout employment.

New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment (exceptions for eligible city employees).

Work schedule: 35 hours per week, 10 AM‑6 PM. Shifts may include early morning or evening events during the outreach season.

Work location: 55 Water Street, New York.
