Facilities Management (FM) at the University of Virginia is offering an exciting opportunity for a Zone Maintenance Carpenter to support the department's goal of providing consistent, cost-effective, and reliable carpentry services in the University Central Grounds Zone. This role involves maintaining both historic and modern facilities, including Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village and UNESCO World Heritage Site which features the Rotunda, Pavilions, Lawn & Range Student Rooms, as well as modern academic facilities.
The Zone Maintenance Carpenter will be responsible for performing a wide range of carpentry tasks, including repairs, renovations, and installations, with a focus on maintaining the structural integrity and appearance of various buildings. Special attention will be given to historic structures, ensuring that all work aligns with historic preservation standards, while also addressing the functional needs of modern facilities. This position plays a key role in ensuring the quality, safety, and reliability of services provided to the university community, combining traditional carpentry skills with modern maintenance practices to enhance the university's infrastructure.
Location: Charlottesville, VA. This is a full‑time position with UVA benefits.
Duties include
Provide framing, door, window, and hardware repairs. Repair and install finish millwork, casework, and other wood products.
Use a variety of diagnostic tools, instruments, equipment, hand and power tools.
Perform carpentry repairs identified during facility inspections or submitted by customer requests.
Maintain knowledge of performing maintenance in residential and occupied spaces.
Maintain accurate work order records and timecards in the work order system.
Respond to urgent repair needs outside of normal working hours.
Attend safety meetings, classes, and training seminars as directed by the supervisor to stay informed of safety issues and safe working practices.
Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, and refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.
Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations.
Work in a team environment to complete projects and assigned tasks.
Provide event support as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities may be assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: A minimum of four years of experience in carpentry and woodworking.
Licensure: Valid Driver's license with positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving history.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience installing, maintaining, adjusting, and/or troubleshooting commercial door closers and automatic door systems in institutional or commercial settings.
Compensation
$25 - $30 per hour ($52,000 - $62,400 annually), dependent on experience and qualifications.
Physical Demands
Employee must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands on repetitive tasks, including overhead tasks. Employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
