Job Summary
The Technical Director plays a vital role in the Fine Arts Department, collaborating closely with department colleagues and overseeing the design, creation, and execution of all technical elements for theatre productions, music and dance concerts, and other Fine Arts events. This includes scenery, lighting, sound, costumes, props, projections, and special effects. The role manages theatre spaces and equipment, mentors students, and fosters a collaborative backstage environment.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee all technical aspects of theatre productions, music and dance concerts, and other school events.

Design and supervise set construction, scenic painting, properties, lighting, sound, costumes, and special effects.

Mentor students in technical theatre processes and ensure they develop skills in design, construction, and backstage operations.

Plan weekly schedules in advance with Department Chair and Theatre Producer/Director based on production deadlines.

Provide audiovisual support and set‑up for events during scheduled hours.

Participate in the annual Summer Stock Camp (8:30 AM–3:30 PM, 2 weeks in mid‑late June).

Maintain and organize theatre spaces and equipment.

Coordinate equipment rentals, installations, and repairs with facilities team and vendors.

Coordinate with Fine Arts faculty to ensure upkeep of theatre spaces.

Schedule after‑school tech crew, construct and paint sets, conduct technical rehearsals, performances, and strike.

Ensure safety and budget compliance throughout all activities.

Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor’s degree required; BA/BFA or Masters in Theatre, Technical Theatre, Theatre Design/Production or related field preferred.

Several years of experience in technical theatre, including design/production in at least two of: scenery, lighting, sound, costumes.

Experience working with high‑school students or young theatre technicians.

Proficiency with power tools, stage carpentry, lighting design (ETC Ion consoles, moving lights, LEDs, DMX), sound design (digital soundboard, wireless mics, QLab), theatrical rigging, projections, video editing.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work at heights.

Strong communication, teamwork, and commitment to a creative learning environment.

Physical Demands

Lift and carry up to 50 lbs; use ladders, scaffolding, or lifts.

Stand, walk, crouch, climb, and move for extended periods during rehearsals, performances, and technical work.

Work in varied environmental conditions and tight backstage spaces.

Support extended work periods including evenings and weekends; schedule pre‑determined with Theatre Producer and Department Chair.
