The Minneapolis Athenaeum, a historic center for rare books, manuscripts, and cultural heritage founded in 1859, is entering an exciting period of renewal.
Today, the Athenaeum is a volunteer led organization, guided by a small and committed Board of Directors and supported by a Bridge Strategy Consultant helping to stabilize operations, reestablish public presence, and prepare for upcoming programming and leadership transition.
As the organization prepares for events late summer/early fall as well as the launch of an Executive Director search, we are seeking a part time consultant to help support these efforts.
This is a short term, part time engagement designed for someone who enjoys building something thoughtfully from the ground up. The consultant will work in close collaboration with the Bridge Strategy Consultant, who will provide direction, context, and support as needs evolve.
Scope of Work
This role focuses on advancing a defined set of communications and research priorities:
Communications & Public Engagement
Maintain and update the Athenaeum website: www.mplsathenaeum.com
Develop and schedule social media content highlighting collections, partnerships, and programming
Draft promotional materials and announcements
Support press outreach and media opportunities
Assist with communications related to the Executive Director search
Promote key initiatives and events
Contribute to visual and narrative storytelling about the collection
Support light brand development work, including refinement or updating of the organization’s logo and visual identity as needed
Research & Organizational Development
Research grant and funding opportunities
Collaborate on development of proposals and partnership materials
Assist in organizing and documenting archival materials
Support program and exhibit preparation as needed, including occasional event attendance
Desired Qualifications
Experience in communications, research, or nonprofit/cultural work
Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and manage priorities within a limited weekly scope
Comfort with website updates and social media tools
Interest in rare books, history, or cultural heritage is a plus
Engagement Details
Time Commitment: 4 hours per week
Timeline: June through October (approximately 18 weeks)
Location: Hybrid (primarily remote with occasional on site work to generate content as well as meet with partners and attend events)
Compensation: $35/hour
