Responsibilities
Directs concept development, design, layout, and art production for print magazines and digital publications, exercising independent creative thinking.
Actively participates in, and sometimes leads, creative meetings, brainstorming sessions and team activities.
Negotiates contracts with freelance designers, illustrators, photographers, and stock photo houses, and works with account executives to manage those relationships.
Guides, trains and mentors other designers.
Co‑ordinates, schedules, supervises and directs photography and off‑site photo shoots.
Holds responsibility for quality, completeness and on‑time delivery of projects.
Works closely with the print buyer to ensure quality of printed pieces and participates in press checks.
Monitors project progress from conceptualization to final proofs.
Efficiently uses computer systems, magazine production software and the digital asset management system.
Ensures design staff use the digital asset management system and archives creative assets.
Collaborates with DMS, IT, Print Buyers and Senior Designers to ensure quality and timely delivery of print, web and mobile publications.
Stays abreast of developments within the department.
Participates in editorial planning sessions.
Other Duties / Responsibilities
May take photographs for various Focus on the Family events and assignments.
Performs other duties as assigned, which may include creating a variety of copyrightable works (print, photography, voice, film, music, visual arts, etc.) for distribution in any media and formats worldwide for the benefit of Focus on the Family.

Travel may be necessary, including occasional overnight stays and weekend travel.

Knowledge / Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Graphics Art or equivalent work experience.
5‑7 years of professional design experience with an agency, studio, publisher or equivalent.
In‑depth understanding of design fundamentals for a wide range of creative and conceptual challenges.
Working knowledge of Focus on the Family mission, philosophy, values and objectives.
