Position Overview
The Tennessee Department of Health is seeking a
Communication Specialist
to support the Children and Youth with Special Healthcare Needs program.
This role will lead
content development, communication strategy, and community engagement initiatives
to promote program goals and improve outreach across the state. The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller with experience in public health or community-focused communications.
Key Responsibilities
Content Development
Develop and execute communication plans aligned with program goals
Create engaging, culturally competent digital and print materials
Collaborate with subject matter experts and community partners
Maintain and update program websites
Develop newsletters, social media campaigns, and public service announcements
Track and report communication performance metrics
Community Engagement
Lead community-focused initiatives including storytelling, interviews, videography, and photography
Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Support statewide campaigns and community education efforts
Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team and adapt to changing priorities
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field
(or equivalent experience with a strong portfolio)
2-5 years of experience in communications (public health, nonprofit, or government preferred)
Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills (writing samples required)
Proficiency in
Canva and Microsoft Office (including Excel)
Experience tracking and reporting communication metrics
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a remote/hybrid environment
Preferred Skills
Knowledge of
digital accessibility standards
(WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508)
Understanding of
cultural competency in health communications
Experience with social media campaigns and public outreach initiatives

Tennessee residents only
Hybrid role with periodic in-office meetings in Nashville (non-reimbursable travel)
Position may be renewed annually based on performance and program needs
