Head Band Director/Coordinator of Fine Arts

Primary Purpose:

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society through participation in the instrumental music program.
Provides leadership and coordination for the K-12 Art, Music, Dance, and Drama programs in order to provide each student enrolled in the district with varied opportunities in the area of fine arts.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from accredited university in Arts and Education or related field preferred
Valid Texas Teaching certificate, with required endorsements for subject/level assigned
Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music programs
Strong understanding of individual and ensemble instrumental pedagogy
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band
Ability to implement policy and procedures
Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Experience:

Successful high school teaching and band directing experience preferred
Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience in public education preferred
Successful experience in leadership and human relations is preferred
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate or acceptable
Head Band Director Responsibilities and Duties:
Direct and manage the overall program of instrumental music for the district
Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL) and district requirements
Plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition
Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations
Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned
Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities
Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP)
Work with other members of the staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods in accordance with district requirements
Employ the use of technologies in the teaching/learning process
Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits
Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required
Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned
Sponsor outside activities approved by the school
Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district
Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social, and emotional development of students
Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials
Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences with students, parents, principals and teachers
Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents and community members
Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly
Participate in staff development activities to improve job related skills
Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers
Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required
Coordinator of Fine Arts Responsibilities and Duties:

Represents the fine arts staff at School Board meetings and other meetings upon request
Advises administration on issues related to student services, staff concerns, and other issues affecting the success of the fine arts program
Oversees the selection of textbooks and the development/revision of the fine arts curriculum
Assists the fine arts staff and principals with the effective implementation of the curriculum in order to achieve state, district, and school goals in fine arts
Ensures that all fine arts instructional programs are consistent throughout the district and abides by state and local courses of study
Conducts, at a minimum, quarterly meetings with the district staff of each discipline
Oversees district-wide fine arts shows, programs, and performances
Assumes responsibility for public and community relations with respect to district-wide fine arts programs
Makes classroom visits and attends fine arts activities for the purpose of providing input on evaluations to principals
Prepares and coordinates the district's fine arts activities calendar
Coordinates in-service/workshop activities for fine arts staff
Prepares proposals and reports for the fine arts program
Assists, as needed, in determining budgetary needs and recommending purchases for district-wide and individual fine arts programs
Oversees fundraising activities for district-wide and individual fine arts programs
Other Responsibilities and Duties:

Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible
Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations
Adhere to the district's safety policies and procedures
Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business
Must be able to perform the essential functions of interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned
Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Fine arts staff in cooperation with the building principal
Performs supervisory responsibilities in accordance with building procedures, Board policies, and applicable laws. Such responsibilities may include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving issues
