Position Overview
The Environment Artist will be responsible for modeling, texturing, and lighting compelling 3D environments and props for the wildly successful co‑op horror game Backrooms: Escape Together.
Responsibilities
Escape Together. This role places a strong emphasis on the creation of procedural and modular environments, leveraging both artistic vision and technical implementation to breakdown common environments found in real‑life into a set of modular art pieces.
Create environment assets with lifelike realism optimized for Unreal Engine 5 real‑time performance (Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps, Hardware Raytracing).
Break down real‑life liminal spaces into modular assets that can be constructed to create explorable in‑game environments.
Build modular kits, trim sheets, decals, and master materials designed for procedural placement and efficient world‑building.
Implement lighting and material setups that reinforce the game’s mood and tone.
Collaborate with design and technical teams to ensure environmental assets meet gameplay and performance requirements.
Participate in internal art reviews and provide constructive feedback to maintain consistency across the project.
Ensure all work aligns with the project’s established visual and technical guidelines.
Required Qualifications
3+ years of professional experience as an Environment Artist in game development.
Strong portfolio demonstrating realistic or atmospheric 3D environments, including examples of procedural generation or tool‑assisted world‑building.
Proficiency with Unreal Engine 5, Substance 3D Painter/Designer, Maya or Blender, and Photoshop.
Expertise in creating assets utilizing Nanite, Virtual Textures, and Hardware Raytracing.
Experience with modular asset workflows and real‑time performance optimization.
Strong grasp of composition, lighting, scale, and color theory.
Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
Passion for environmental storytelling and atmospheric world‑building.
Nice to Haves
Experience in horror or narrative‑driven games.
Proficiency in vertex painting, decals, and advanced material effects.
Interest in the aesthetics of liminal or psychologically driven spaces.
Experience with Unreal Engine’s PCG system.
Compensation and Benefits
$50–$75 USD per hour, commensurate with experience, skillset, and portfolio quality.
