Job Description
The Wall Street Journal is seeking an editor to help shepherd our Sports coverage. You will edit must‑read stories about the most dynamic people and institutions in sports, guiding the Journal’s distinctive sports coverage and breaking news while telling impactful stories.
Responsibilities
Impeccable writing and editing skills.
Distill complex ideas into simple, captivating stories.
Generate creative story ideas in new formats.
Maintain a keen sense of the Journal’s audience and distinctive voice.
Exercise news judgment under intense pressure.
Handle breaking news on deadline.
Coordinate with teams across the newsroom to bring big stories to life.
Produce bullet‑proof fast‑moving news stories with proper sourcing, legal and ethical considerations.
Ensure top‑tier execution and ethical standards are consistently met across all platforms.
Qualifications
4–8 years of editing experience (reporters with exceptional writing skills are also encouraged).
Proficiency with digital publishing tools across the Journal’s platforms.
Deep interest in sports and ability to speak knowledgeably across disciplines.
Exceptional display skills and understanding of audience engagement across platforms.
Sense of humor and ability to inject clever, intelligent angles into widely covered stories.
Talent for writing snappy, attention‑grabbing headlines.
Sharp eye for story framing.
Ability to write stories on occasion.
Meticulous fact‑checking and attention to detail for high‑profile stories.
Visual thinking and interest in how stories present across platforms.
Collaborative, team‑player attitude with an upbeat, entrepreneurial outlook.
Flexibility to be available nights and weekends when required.
Benefits and Compensation
Base Pay Range: $120,000 – $145,000. Bonus and benefits eligibility details vary by role, experience, and location.
