Purpose
Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications, the Digital Content Specialist independently develops, implements, and evaluates content and campaign strategies that advance the mission, brand, and enrollment goals of Cal State Monterey Bay. The position collaborates with campus partners to develop and deliver integrated communications, manage campaign lifecycles, and ensure alignment with institutional brand and accessibility standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Marketing Content Writing, Review, and Publishing

Writes and edits content for webpages, dashboards, emails, and printed materials, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and student-focused messaging.

Organizes and publishes approved content using CMS platforms (TerminalFour), Pathify, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and WYSIWYG tools.

Reviews, edits, and approves content submitted via campus workflows, verifying alignment with university brand style, accessibility standards, and content strategy.

Formats and publishes content using established templates, naming conventions, and publishing protocols.

Collaborates with lead marketers to ensure published assets meet communication goals and are audience-appropriate.

Web Auditing, Strategy Alignment, and Accessibility

Audits web pages and digital assets to ensure adherence to CSUMB’s content strategy, brand style, and voice in both visual and written formats.

Conducts structured reviews for Title II compliance (e.g., headings, contrast, alt-text, captions), and coordinates corrections with page owners or technical support.

Collaborates with the UX/UI Specialist to assess user flow and recommend improvements that enhance clarity, engagement, and message effectiveness.

Documents audit findings and develops recommendations to improve content consistency, accuracy, and effectiveness across digital platforms.

Places and configures media assets, including images and iframe-embedded content, ensuring web/mobile compatibility and accessibility.

Captions video content to ensure compliance with Title II and CSU digital accessibility standards.

Campaign Coordination and Digital Channel Support

Builds and deploys email campaigns using Salesforce Marketing Cloud, ensuring copy, structure, and visuals are brand-aligned and accessible.

Coordinates cross-channel content launches (email, web, dashboard) to ensure accurate timing, sequencing, and asset delivery.

Assists in editing and publishing content for Pathify dashboards, department pages, and other digital engagement tools.

Tracks approvals, content versions, and deployment status to ensure efficient execution of communication plans.

Supports content calendars and campaign reporting as part of an integrated team approach.

Platform Support and Training

Assists with content platform maintenance tasks such as updating user access, managing permissions, and onboarding new contributors.

Creates user-friendly tutorials, documentation, and training materials to support decentralized content authors in following CSUMB standards.

Provides Tier 1 support to campus users navigating content publishing tools, templates, or accessibility requirements.

Works with the Digital Communications team to identify and streamline common workflow issues.

Supports testing and implementation of new platform features or updates as needed.

Other Functions

Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Will support evening and weekend communications needs, including filming, editing, and publishing, during major university events such as Welcome Week, Open House, Raft Weekend, Giving Day, Admitted Otter Day, Commencement, and others.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Working skills and knowledge of marketing, communications, public relations, branding, and/or related disciplines.

Working knowledge of protocols and institutional etiquette related to public and media relations.

Working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media.

Skilled in developing and implementing marketing and/or communications strategies and campaigns.

Strong project planning and organizational skills to plan, organize, and manage multiple marketing projects.

Strong composition and editing skills to quickly produce clear and concise standard documents for internal and external publication.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills to create and deliver marketing initiatives and campaigns.

Ability to provide lead work direction and training to others.

Proficiency in using communication and marketing software and tools.

Minimum Qualifications
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Specialized Skills
Demonstrated skill with spreadsheet, database, e‑mail, social media, publication and multimedia presentation software. Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs. Demonstrates an expert skillset in various digital arts software programs including Adobe Creative Suite: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat. Advanced Skills in graphic creation, print design, and directing photography for publication purposes. Skilled in developing, coordinating, designing and implementing annual reports and other publications. Advanced skills in managing vendors, such as mail houses, printers & photographers.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in media production, film, journalism, or related field.

At least three (3) years of professional experience in multimedia production with increasing levels of responsibility.

Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition).

Experience publishing content to a university CMS and/or managing institutional media archives.

Experience mentoring or supervising students in a higher education setting.

Knowledge of AP style, plain language, and ADA digital accessibility standards.

Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet strategic goals.

Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB’s Vision.

Physical Environment
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off‑campus locations.
