Job Summary


KKTV 11 News, Southern Colorado's dominant multimedia news organization, seeks a News Director to lead the development of news content on television, streaming, mobile, and various other platforms. The candidate must inspire a team of journalists to serve the local community with a tradition of excellence. Deadline to apply: May 30, 2026.


Duties / Responsibilities



  • Hands‑on news manager with a proven track record for coaching and developing talent, solid journalism skills, planning, a desire and ability to own the big news story, and passion for breaking news and weather.

  • Lead and supervise all aspects of news, weather, and sports programming production.

  • Manage all non‑production aspects of the News Department.

  • Plan and manage staffing, training, and performance evaluations for the News Department.

  • Make hiring, evaluation, promotion, and termination decisions.

  • Develop news coverage strategy for the station and its website.

  • Critique newscasts daily to correct errors, improve coverage, and provide mentoring feedback.

  • Assign projects to staff and verify deadlines are met.

  • Ensure achievement of viewer rating goals.

  • Determine programming and equipment evaluation needed to produce quality programming.

  • Respond to coverage questions.

  • Work with senior station leaders to establish and reach station goals.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Be extremely detail‑oriented.

  • Manage continuous coverage for breaking news, potentially spanning several hours.


Qualifications / Requirements



  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Fluency in English.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • 5+ years of professional journalism or related experience.

  • Experience guiding, directing, and motivating a team, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.

  • Experience establishing long‑range objectives and specifying strategies and actions to achieve them.

  • Ability to identify developmental needs of others and coach or mentor to improve knowledge or skills.

  • Experience preparing and maintaining departmental budgets.

  • Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, and other office equipment.

  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Ability to listen fully to understand employee needs and communicate with a team to shape solutions.

  • Ability to develop a creative news strategy based on research, follow the station's brand, and execute during all newscasts.
