Responsibilities
The Business Development Manager, in collaboration with underwriting, is responsible for optimizing profitable growth over the long term in an assigned geographic territory, including the development and execution of industry‑leading go‑to‑market and sales strategies while maintaining highly effective relationships with independent agents and internal customers.
Execute business development plans, market research, competitive and product intelligence, and collaborate with internal partners to achieve production and profitability targets.
Build and cultivate mutually beneficial partnerships with agency ownership, management, and frontline staff to increase BNP’s relevance within the agency.
Establish position as a trusted advisor while delivering product information, underwriting philosophy, customer experience benefits and new business development to increase depth and maximize agency revenue.
Show strong knowledge of the territory and region, including agency, competitor, demographics and economic trends, and share this knowledge with the BNP team to promote organizational learning and opportunities.
Provide leadership in the areas of business development, agency relationships, go‑to‑market strategies and client service.
Collaborate with and support internal business partners to provide solutions and maximize agency engagement.
Take an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to identifying and developing new business opportunities, sales strategies, customer service and engagement strategies.
In collaboration with underwriting, develop an annual Business Development Strategy for the assigned territory that matches market potential, underwriting appetite, customer base and competitive environment.
Identify opportunities within the assigned territory to leverage book roll and/or book thinning opportunities.
Manage agency compensation programs for participating agencies (e.g., profit sharing, new business overrides).
Prospect and appoint agents in conjunction with the overall regional strategy for expansion of distribution outlets for BNP products; make recommendations to terminate agencies based on results and relationships.
Utilize market analytics to assess geographic territory and identify prospective and current customers with highest growth potential.
Develop understanding of specific industry characteristics including customer behaviors and patterns within the assigned territory.
Help identify and develop technical and sales training needs within the office; develop and conduct training and mentoring for BNP employees.
Coordinate the development of sales & marketing materials in conjunction with Sales and Distribution, Underwriting and Product teams.
Perform other related duties as assigned by manager.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree.
Five+ years of commercial sales or underwriting experience in the industry.
Advanced ability to influence the sale: ability to convince current and prospective agents to represent and promote BNP products and services.
Advanced relationship‑management skills: superior interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with internal and external customers.
Advanced skill of driving for results: self‑assured, responds confidently to objections, and does not give up easily.
Ability to collaborate, provide constructive feedback and actively listen.
Advanced communication skills: strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to deliver professional presentations.
