MASS MoCA seeks an Associate Director of Marketing with a desire to work in a dynamic, mission-driven, museum environment. As the museum advances its 2024–2030 Strategic Plan and builds momentum around audience growth, storytelling, and brand positioning, this role will play a key role in shaping and executing marketing strategies that support institutional priorities.

The position reports to the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) and engages with key stakeholders throughout the museum (curators, creative producers in performing arts and public programs, members of advancement team, etc.) to assess needs, audiences and project timelines, and develops marketing campaign objectives, audience development goals, and branded marketing materials across channels.

The position is an action-oriented self-starter and strategic thinker who develops, oversees, and implements marketing campaigns and corresponding content to include digital, social, print, and email. The successful candidate is a strong manager who has a passion for arts and cultural institutions, enjoys being part of a close-knit team that works collaboratively across departments, and thrives in a nimble, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Devise, develop and implement seasonal and annual marketing and media plans in collaboration with the CCO that elevate MASS MoCA and its programming (performing arts, visual arts, public programs, retail stores and special events) and support audience benchmark goals for local, regional, national and international visitors.

Manage and direct the day-to-day work and performance of the Senior Manager of Marketing Operations as well as the graphic design team, exercising independent judgment and authority in personnel and operational matters. This position is responsible for effectively making decisions regarding hiring, promotion, discipline, discharge, performance evaluation, scheduling, workload assignments, mentoring, and corrective action. The role ensures consistent implementation and enforcement of institutional policies, procedures, and operational standards, and acts in the interest of the employer when addressing personnel, compliance, and performance issues.

Oversee project management and creative asset collection support for institutional initiatives and large-scale marketing campaigns such as season announcements, exhibitions, festivals and signature events.

Secure media partnerships and negotiate media buys based on priority audience segments and reach. Write and oversee the design and placement of marketing materials and all advertising for print, radio, out-of-home, social and digital. Responsible for processes, budget and deliverables.

Oversee content strategy and tone in alignment with brand and editorial guidelines for the museum website and social media; and develop and implement plans for editorial direction. Direct staff to edit and post content across marketing platforms with particular attention to programs, exhibitions, and announcements.

Develop and steward strong relationships with local, regional, and national paid media outlets for both regional and tourism audiences. Remain ahead of the curve on key changes in communication effectiveness, trends, and the dynamic media/advertising environment including social media and digital platforms.

In support of the CCO, contribute to the alignment of all external communications and brand narrative.

Develop, manage and share marketing campaign reporting against goals and ROI including Google Analytics, social media analytics, and other available data.

Recommend and manage the marketing budget to inform annual departmental budgeting and planning for approval by the CCO

Support contributed revenue goals by promoting membership programs and philanthropic campaigns in collateral, email and digital/social media.

Serve on inter-departmental task forces including wayfinding, visitor surveys, and others as needed.

Build and maintain relationships with peer cultural organizations and community leaders, to promote connectivity and outreach (and keen situational awareness).
