Job Summary
This position is responsible for the delivery of high‑quality public art to create a customer‑friendly environment that is inviting and secure, advancing the MTA’s goal of improving customer experience. The Manager provides professional‑level project management in planning, implementing, and evaluating multiple projects within the Permanent Art Program, from initial site planning to project completion, in collaboration with Construction & Development staff, consultants, and MTA agency partners.

Responsibilities

Lead the artist selection process and commission approximately 10 capitally funded projects annually; oversee 20‑25 ongoing capitally funded projects; negotiate contracts, manage procurement, monitor construction progress, and address engineering and technical design issues in coordination with construction and design managers and consultants.

Coordinate the Conservation Initiative: survey, assess, and maintain a growing collection of over 400 permanent artworks valued at more than $290 million, develop long‑term conservation plans, contribute to a conservation database, and conduct research on innovative materials and methods.

Develop and coordinate the Archive Program: manage historic documents, film and photographic prints, digital data, and new media assets for internal and external documentation, scholarship, and education, and recommend systems for indexing and organizing digital archives.

Provide programming and production support for the award‑winning Poster Program that promotes and celebrates mass transit in the New York Metro region.

Support the Digital Art Program by commissioning 3–4 new‑media artworks for Fulton Center, Grand Central Madison, and other MTA locations annually.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Professional experience and knowledge of public art and architecture.

Strong project‑management experience with familiarity in technical issues for art integration, materials, construction, and urban design principles.

Self‑starter with the ability to work independently and collaborate with the Director, Deputy Director, and the team.

Extensive administrative experience, including budget oversight.

Excellent oral presentation and writing skills; proven ability to document meeting minutes and project status reports.

Professional interpersonal skills.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) or equivalent experience in Arts Administration, Art Education, Visual Arts, or Art History.

Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with arts organizations and artists.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Arts/Sciences preferred.

Strong technical knowledge and experience with database programs and applications for the Permanent Art Program projects database.

Working knowledge of duties in managing and maintaining a growing art collection.

Excellent organizational skills.

Knowledge of public agency administration/organization.

Design background.

Other Information

May need to work outside of normal work hours (evenings and weekends).

Travel may be required to other MTA locations or external sites.
