REPORTER, STATE POLITICS, WBUR News and Programming
WBUR is looking for a reporter with a passion for covering the news and uncovering original and compelling stories that matter to our community. We hold our reporting to high standards, love great storytelling, and enjoy the fun of media production.
We need a reporter who thrives on covering Beacon Hill, state political news, including the governor’s office, the state legislature, and everything else that makes up state politics. This reporter will lead WBUR’s coverage of the 2026 gubernatorial race. The role requires source‑building, on‑site coverage at the State House, reviewing documents and data, submitting public records requests, and working closely with editors to set priorities and pursue dailies, short‑term pieces, and longer‑term stories requiring deeper research and reporting.
Responsibilities
Cover Beacon Hill and state political events, including the governor’s office and the state legislature.
Develop scoops and produce regular enterprise stories that distinguish WBUR’s journalism on a competitive beat.
Respond quickly and smartly to breaking news.
Build and maintain a broad network of sources across a diverse constituency.
Collaborate with editors to set priorities and pursue both daily and longer‑term pieces.
Create compelling stories in multiple formats—audio, digital, live events, social (including video), and more.
Qualifications
At least three to six years of related experience.
Passion for public media journalism.
Strong editorial judgment and ability to cover a wide variety of stories and assignments.
Experience producing stories for multiple platforms.
Strong research and organizational skills.
Clear communication in all forms, including written, spoken, and digital media.
Fluency in multiple languages is a plus.
Additional Information
Candidates who demonstrate a higher level of experience, expertise, and independence may be considered for a Senior Reporter level, with a salary range of $88,868 to $128,300. The final title and level will be determined based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
This position is covered under our collective bargaining agreement with the SAG‑AFTRA union, and the minimum annual salary for this position is $71,250. Compensation may increase based on experience and internal equity.
