Engineering & Construction | High-Value Projects | Real Influence
Let’s be honest.
This isn’t a “keep-the-lights-on” commercial role.
This is a front‑row seat to some of the most complex, high‑value engineering and construction projects in the business — where decisions matter, numbers tell stories, and commercial leadership actually shapes outcomes.
If you enjoy owning the commercial picture from bid to final account, working alongside people who know what they’re doing, and being trusted to make calls — you’ll feel at home here.
The Role
As Commercial Manager, you’ll sit at the heart of the Business Unit, guiding projects from early tender conversations right through to completion and close‑out.
You'll
Shape commercial strategy, not just report on it
Lead contract negotiations, risk positions and dispute resolution
Manage revenue, cashflow and profit plans (and challenge them when needed)
Build, develop and mentor a high-performing commercial team
Work shoulder-to-shoulder with Operations, Engineering, Planning and Finance
This is a role for someone who enjoys commercial control, clarity and accountability — without needing everything escalated to a Director.
What You’ll Be Trusted With
Owning the commercial health of your Business Unit — forecasts, actuals, governance and reporting
Leading tender evaluations, gap analysis and contract negotiations
Interpreting contracts, identifying risk, and turning issues into managed outcomes
Ensuring the right commercial structures, systems and people are in place
Auditing live projects and improving commercial performance where it counts
Managing subcontract terms, payments and compliance (before site starts, ideally)
Closing final accounts properly — including retention release (yes, actually on time)
You’ll Also Play a Key Role In
Strengthening commercial awareness across the wider business
Feeding lessons learned back into estimating and pre‑construction
Supporting continuous improvement and lean commercial processes
What We’re Looking For
You’re likely already operating as a Commercial Manager or Senior QS in a complex construction or engineering environment.
More Importantly, You
Understand contracts beyond the headlines
Can balance risk, value and relationships without losing sleep
Are commercially confident enough to challenge — and pragmatic enough to collaborate
Care about accuracy, structure and follow‑through
Enjoy developing people, not just managing spreadsheets
A working understanding of planning, scheduling and progress reporting is essential — because commercial decisions don’t exist in a vacuum.
Why This Role Is Different
You’re involved from day one, not brought in to fix problems later
You’ll work with a vibrant, agile, multi‑functional team that values input
There’s genuine investment in career development and leadership growth
You’ll be trusted to lead — not micromanaged
In Short
Big projects. Real responsibility. Clear progression.
