Job Description
WBUR, a leader in public media, is seeking a Reporter–State Politics to cover Beacon Hill, state political news, the governor, the state legislature, and the 2026 gubernatorial race. The reporter will develop scoops, produce enterprise stories, and respond quickly to breaking news. The position is based in Boston, MA.
Responsibilities
Lead coverage of state politics, including the governor’s office and the state legislature.
Develop and secure original investigative scoops.
Produce regular enterprise stories that distinguish WBUR journalism.
Respond quickly and smartly to breaking news.
Cover activity at the State House in person, review documents and data, and submit public records requests.
Work closely with editors to set priorities and pursue both daily and longer‑term pieces.
Write and produce stories for multiple platforms—audio, digital, live events, social, video, and more.
Meet tight daily deadlines, file for newscast and digital broadcasts, and deepen coverage as required.
Qualifications
At least 3–6 years of experience in public media journalism covering state politics.
Strong editorial judgment and the ability to cover a wide variety of stories.
Experience producing stories for multiple platforms.
Strong research and organizational skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication.
Fluency in multiple languages is a plus.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary Grade: $74,492 – $88,841 (based on experience). The minimum annual salary is $71,250 under the collective bargaining agreement with the SAG‑AFTRA union. Compensation may increase based on experience and internal equity.
