Position Summary
The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) has coordination and clinical skills required for the comprehensive management of Otolaryngology/Trauma patients, including biological, social, and psychological assessments. This position includes treatment of both adult and pediatric Otolaryngology/Trauma patients. The APP coordinates involvement of medical specialty teams necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient, reviews the plan of care with members of the clinical team, participates in directing that care, performs diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, and coordinates discharge planning (as applicable). The APP participates in the education of residents and medical/APP
ursing students.

Minimum Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner
Graduate of a CCNE accredited APRN program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
Successful completion of an AORN accredited RNFA program for surgical first assist.
AHA sponsored BLS Certification required.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at the discretion of the department.
Experience for Nurse Practitioner
Eligible new graduates will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner
Experience in Otolaryngology preferred.
Minimum Qualifications for Physician Assistant
Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant.
Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) training program required.
Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required.
Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
AHA sponsored BLS Certification required.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at the discretion of the department.
Experience for Physician Assistant
Eligible new graduates will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications for Physician Assistant
Master’s level degree as Physician Assistant preferred.
Otolaryngology experience preferred.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Manages comprehensive and individualized care for Otolaryngology/Trauma patients and their families in multiple settings.
Completes daily rounds, consults, peri‑operative duties (including first assisting), peri‑procedural and general evaluations in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
Completes integrated assessments.
Orders additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate following established clinical Guidelines and Protocols.
Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.
Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in the medical record.
Facilitates patient care by coordinating appropriate services and tests for outpatient follow‑up appointments in the clinic.
Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care, including procedures, teaching, peri‑operative/peri‑procedural management, discharge planning, and referral to other team members.
Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across all ages.
Identifies unstable or complex patient situations and facilitates appropriate intervention.
Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
Serves as a provider of patient care in ambulatory settings, Ruby, and Children’s Hospital.
Assists in the collection of outcome measures as applicable.
Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning by evaluating and managing individual patient/family needs.
Uses equipment safely.
Bases decisions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
Uses teaching/learning theory and appropriate strategies for education to staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
Promotes a learning environment responsive to patient/family preferences.
Maintains knowledge base throughout the year.
Completes all identified clinical competencies.
Serves as a resource to staff caring for Otolaryngology/Trauma patients.
Provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel.
Participates in community programs and literature distribution as appropriate.
Documents plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly in the medical record.
Collaborates with leaders and staff to achieve patient‑outcome improvements.
Provides leadership in implementing changes that positively impact patient outcomes.
Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff for problem solving.
Participates in interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
Supports innovation in expanding the role in delivery of care throughout inpatient and ambulatory settings.
Provides leadership for committees and task forces.
Documents hours and submits billing reports as appropriate.
Reviews Otolaryngology/Trauma data and recommends changes as necessary.
Participates in clinical trials and research studies.
Assists faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
Physical Requirements
Work requires strength and/or stamina; lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying of patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40+ pounds.

This position has OR – First Assist responsibilities. RNFA is required for a Nurse Practitioner.
