About us
Urban Poets is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting artists and communities to inspire positive social change. Founded in Atlanta in 2019, the organization began as a poetry open mic created to raise awareness about poverty and homelessness. Since then, Urban Poets has evolved into a multidisciplinary arts and youth development nonprofit that operates at the intersection of art, access, and advocacy. Our purpose is to use arts education, creative workforce development, and culturally rooted programming to strengthen communities—particularly in historically underinvested neighborhoods of Fulton County. We believe art is a catalyst for connection, healing, academic achievement, and economic mobility..
Program Brief Overview
The Urban Art Collab is an annual program that offers participants the opportunity to engage with art, culture, and history; develop workplace and team-building skills; and learn about a range of professional options and career paths. We encourage students to use their creativity and teamwork skills to create a musical recording that promotes positive social change. Urban Poets will invite high school students to our 10-day summer camp.
We ask each student to select a course then we pair the students into groups. The groups will consist of a writer, a music producer, and an audio engineer. At the end of the program, students are asked to perform their musical creation, and we invite our SMEs to help evaluate their projects. We also invite the students' friends and family to our closing ceremony so they can see their performances.
