Job Title
Under direction, is responsible for serving as a subject matter specialist for the installation, repair, and maintenance of complex communications systems; performs related duties as required.
Examples Of Work
Performs routine and emergency service, maintenance, installation, and repair work on complex communications equipment and components; Provides remote access and in-person technical support for 911 communications' computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, communications equipment such as phones, radios, radio towers, radio consoles, alerting systems, and related software for the City of Columbus and surrounding Franklin County municipalities; Serves as liaison to vendors supplying specialized equipment, maintenance services, and parts for complex communication networks; Performs computer terminal or communications network troubleshooting using appropriate testing equipment; Generates and maintains communication systems software including monitoring, statistics, and diagnostic networking programs or line protocol test routines; maintains and repairs LAN and WAN systems; Plans and coordinates the installation, maintenance, and repair of communication systems hardware and conducts inspections to ensure that equipment is installed properly; Configures new software to operate effectively within various communication systems; coordinates the installation of software and hardware system updates; Creates and manages new user accounts, and login credentials for communication systems specific to the Department of Public Safety; Assists with the construction of communication networks and network facilities and coordinates the installation, repair, and construction with the appropriate City personnel and private vendors; Analyzes, tests, evaluates, and calibrates complex communications equipment to ensure the performance of preventative maintenance functions; Maintains records, repair schedules, and various reports as required by management, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), or other regulatory agencies; Prepares monthly and ad hoc reports with data compiled from various communication systems; May lead the work of employees engaged in performing technical communication systems work.
Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years of experience installing, repairing, or maintaining complex communications systems. Possession of a valid driver's license. Some positions may require specialized certifications in public safety information technology.
