Position Summary
Harlem Lacrosse seeks a full-time Managing Director, Programs to oversee the execution of our innovative, year‑round, school‑based program in our Baltimore region. The Managing Director for Programs provides strategic management to our programmatic efforts in the region. In addition to direct management of Program Directors placed in the schools where we work, the Managing Director will oversee program operations and evaluation, contribute to organizational programming strategy, and help to foster a strong and engaged regional culture. Reporting to the regional Executive Director, and sitting on the National Leadership Team, this is an ideal opportunity for a driven and goal‑oriented leader with a passion for youth development to utilize their program development, people management, and executive leadership skills to help youth achieve their full potential.

Principal Responsibilities
Coach and Develop Program Leaders - 50%

Develop and retain high‑performing direct‑service program staff who can effectively implement Harlem Lacrosse’s mission

Provide regular feedback, coaching, training, and performance management to middle and high school Program Directors including regular travel to school sites for observations

Contribute expertise in youth development, pedagogy, and lacrosse coaching to support Program Directors to design, plan and deliver high‑quality, effective programming

Support staff to set and achieve rigorous goals for their program, including but not limited to retention, participation, and academic, athletic, and social‑emotional outcomes for participants

Foster development around diversity, equity and inclusiveness, and coach staff to integrate equitable and culturally sustaining practices in their programming

Assist with the planning and delivery of training and professional development sessions for Harlem Lacrosse staff in region and across the country

Contribute to the recruitment and hiring process for Program Directors across HL’s five regions

Support the Execution of Regional Program Strategy - 30%

Ensure quality implementation of all aspects of programming in region, including guiding the vision and direction for that programming, under the direction of the Executive Director and in alignment with organizational vision and strategy

Liaise and collaborate with principals, faculty and staff in partner schools, as well as parents or caregivers, and community members in surrounding neighborhoods, to ensure that Harlem Lacrosse continues to be an effective partner in the communities where we operate

Oversee the collection of data and conduct evaluations to continuously improve regional programming, and contribute to the development of organizational strategy and practices

Create staffing plans and work schedules to ensure all events are properly staffed to run effectively and ensure the safety and positive experience of all participants

Coordinate with the Chief Pathing Officer and National Pathing Team for school planning and college and career counseling efforts for the region

Coordinate with the National Development team as a liaison to the Program Directors in ensuring mentoring programs, site visits, and other activities related to the success of Development initiatives are managed successfully

Manage the intake and onboarding of volunteers and part‑time assistant coaches

Monitor and manage the region’s programmatic budget as a whole, and support Program Directors to make efficient and impactful use of their site budgets

Ensure program staff adhere to established organizational policies and procedures and are compliant with relevant legal, safety and ethical obligations

Partner with the Executive Director to foster a regional culture of high standards, continuous improvement and collaboration

Organizational Stewardship - 20%

Maintain consistent communication with the Executive Director, National Director of Programs, and Chief Program Officer as to the general health and wellbeing of the local program, including honest and realistic assessments of what’s working and where additional support could be helpful

Sit on the National Programming Team to inform organizational programmatic expectations, goals, curriculum, and strategy; support national programmatic initiatives including summer camp, national club teams, organization‑wide professional development efforts, and others

Maintain connection with leadership in other cities with a constant eye toward collaboration and connection. At Harlem Lacrosse, our cities operate as parts of a whole rather than as individual entities, and so a role of the leadership in each city is to ensure positive connection to others

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal Managing Director is energized by the opportunity to empower high‑performing staff to create life‑changing experiences for youth. They bring an extensive background in people and program management, as well as academic instruction, youth development, and/or athletic coaching. While they excel at influencing and motivating others to achieve outcomes, they are also willing to roll up their sleeves as active participants in the work. As program leaders, they adeptly connect strategy to tactics to evaluation to ensure we are delivering the best possible experiences for our participants. As people leaders, they shine when building relationships with diverse stakeholders and create collaborative teams aligned around common goals.

Qualifications

3+ years of demonstrated success building and leading a team in a fast‑paced, direct‑service, nonprofit organization

Demonstrated experience managing people in a professional setting

Commitment to racial and gender equity and excitement about demonstrating that commitment in the execution of this position

Experience playing and coaching lacrosse; experience coaching youth or beginners a plus

Strong communication, organizational and prioritization skills

Comfort with ambiguity and strong judgment to make values‑aligned decisions in uncertain or unprecedented circumstances

Passion for supporting systematically disenfranchised youth, preferably in the field of mentoring, education, and/or sports‑based youth development

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required

Access to reliable transportation to travel to all regional school sites several times per week for program observations

Morning, evening and weekend work is often required

Local and regional travel, including occasional overnight travel with the team, is required

Compensation
The salary range for this position is 78,000 - 84,000 and is commensurate with previous work experience.
