Position Summary

Primary Purpose
The Scenic Design and Technology Instructor is responsible for teaching foundational and advanced courses in scenic design and technical theatre within a collaborative arts environment. This role includes mentoring students, supervising lab and shop activities, and supporting production work. The instructor also serves as the lead scenic designer for productions, guiding projects from concept through completion while collaborating with performing arts faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and Student Development
• Teach a range of scenic design, stagecraft, and technical theatre courses
• Mentor students during lab hours and production activities
• Prepare students for careers in the arts or transfer to baccalaureate programs

Production and Technical Oversight
• Serve as lead scenic designer for all productions
• Oversee scenic construction from concept through completion
• Supervise student workers and ensure safe shop practices
• Manage shop equipment, materials, and supplies

Program and Institutional Support
• Participate in student mentoring and recruiting efforts
• Attend departmental meetings and contribute to assessment reporting
• Serve on committees and support institutional initiatives

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
• Master of Fine Arts degree in Scenic Design and/or Technology, Design, Technical Theatre, or Theatre; OR
• Master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Design, Technical Direction, Technology, Technical Theatre, or Theatre
• Ability to pass employment verification, reference screening, and background check

• Strong collaboration and communication skills in a creative team environment
• Ability to supervise student workers and manage multiple projects

Ergonomic Requirements
• Ability to work in a theatre and shop environment, including standing, walking, and lifting materials
• Ability to operate tools and equipment used in scenic construction
• Ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and physical activity
