Broadcast Engineer
Position type: Full‑Time 12‑Month. Department: University Television Center. Location: Main Campus – Starkville, MS.
Position Function
The primary function of this position is to operate and maintain television and radio equipment at the University Television Center (UTC), campus radio station (WMSV‑FM), and various on‑ and off‑campus locations. The engineer provides operational support to television and radio productions and troubleshoots equipment to the component level with minimal supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain university television and radio production equipment.
Assist in maintaining FCC compliance for WMSV‑FM.
Install new production systems and components, integrating and controlling them.
Maintain technical documentation and accurate records of services.
Maintain university cable channel playout system (MSTV) and monitor feeds.
Configure computer networking and operating systems, and troubleshoot professional audio‑video environments. Resolve software and hardware problems at the lowest level.
Set up and configure video and technical production systems—audio, video, data routing, control, signal processing, cameras, switchers, mixers, and intercom.
Set up, break down, and troubleshoot equipment on remote field productions; establish and maintain fiber optic, TCP/IP, MPEG and other transmission links.
Troubleshoot equipment and recommend solutions, coordinating repair with vendors.
Fabricate cables, patch panels and bulkheads, and perform small part modifications.
Maintain equipment storage, workshop, tools, spare parts and inventory; keep accurate asset and vehicle records.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree or higher in electronics, broadcast technology, communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
At least 1–3 years of experience maintaining and installing broadcast equipment or similar media systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in communications, electronics, or similar field with 3 or more years of experience maintaining broadcast equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to work long and irregular hours when required.
Excellent organizational, task management, communication and interpersonal skills.
Working knowledge of SMPTE, FCC regulations and related standards desired.
Ability to take direction and work with vendor support to resolve issues.
Attention to detail and ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities.
Ability to prioritize tasks, make decisions and take corrective action without supervision.
Knowledge of electrical wiring, UPS systems and circuit loading.
Experience with audio‑video switching, connectivity, routing, terminations and signal flow.
Proficiency with basic electrical and electronic test equipment.
Ability to read, understand and maintain technical documentation and drawings.
Knowledge of essential media‑related IT concepts: Microsoft and MacOS operating systems, TCP/IP, SAN/NAS, backup systems, media system architecture, wiring, performance analysis, NAS backup and archive practices.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Frequent external deadlines, irregular hours, and interruptions are common. Tasks involve walking, sitting, reaching, talking, handling objects, standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Vision and hearing requirements include seeing printed or electronic information and responding to telephone conversations. Exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, chemicals, and working on ladders or elevated surfaces may occur.
