What We Need
As the Temporary Bartels Illustrator, you will work as part of a team and independently, contributing to a productive work environment. You will need to be able to communicate ideas to others and work collaboratively and inclusively to develop visuals that further the Cornell Lab’s mission.
Associate’s Degree and 2+ years of relevant experience in illustration or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Able to deliver work on schedule and incorporate feedback throughout the production process.
Biological accuracy is vital; the illustrator will consult with their supervisor and Cornell Lab experts before final completion and delivery of artwork.
Willingness to work on a broad range of projects that arise during the residency with various subject matters, styles, audiences, and applications.
Respect for and sensitivity to differences of culture, identity, and background in the workplace and with external stakeholders.
Additional qualifications considered highly helpful:
Certification in scientific illustration or a related field, and/or equivalent work experience demonstrated in portfolio samples.
College‑level coursework related to science illustration, including fine art courses such as observational drawing and courses in illustration, graphic design, biology, and the sciences.
A passion for further developing ornithological art skills.
Experience in drawing or painting birds in one or more mediums or artistic styles.
Interest in science communication.
Interest in art instruction and sharing techniques with others, including university courses and informal workshops.
Job Details
This is a temporary, full‑time in‑person position at 40 hours per week. The assignment is for six months and can be extended for an additional six months contingent upon available work, funding, and performance. Location: Ithaca, New York. Remote work is not available.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is $25.52 per hour.
