Manages internal and external communications activities for MedStar Health Research Institute, writing and editing newsletters and materials, planning events and activities, and supporting agency-wide and system-wide initiatives under the direction of the Vice President of Patient Experience & Communication. Manages digital communication strategy; develops and updates content for internet and intranet. Develops content and concepts for external communication materials and community outreach. Writes and compiles articles for publications and press releases.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Vice President of Patient Experience & Communication, responsible for positively positioning MedStar Health Research Institute news and initiatives to internal and external audiences.
Manages internal communication efforts including employee newsletters, leadership talking points, informational campaigns, intranet content, associate events, and promotional activities that support internal agency objectives. Establishes appropriate timelines and sets goals to measure the effectiveness of internal campaigns.
Plans, promotes, and executes events including annual recognition events, town hall meetings, new hire orientation, organizational development/training, open office hours with executives, and celebratory events.
Assists in the development of departmental and client communications budgets and in ongoing effectiveness measurement for communications programming.
Develops and maintains a shared repository of communication documents and materials, patient education, and other communication resources in accordance with guidelines.
Contributes to strategic content development and visual impact for MedStar Health Research Institute and client-related work on MedStar Health's internal and external websites with a focus on look and feel as well as technical enhancement of the platform.
Works with internal and external sources/vendors (photographers, designers, video crews, creative agencies, printers, décor, and caterers) to produce superior content and collateral.
Researches, writes, produces, and distributes collateral material including brochures, invitations, flyers, posters, handbooks, reports, displays, and other written communication as necessary for internal and external agency programs and services. Identifies opportunities for additional communication/collateral material when warranted. Collaborates with the Business Development department to facilitate advertisement design and placement and serves as a resource for promotional ideas.
Supports philanthropy efforts internally and externally.
Oversees department intern, delegates appropriate responsibilities, and ensures internship work duties meet collegiate requirements for course credit.
Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams, meetings, committees, and represents the MedStar Health Research Institute in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
Minimal Qualifications
Bachelor's degree (preferably in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Business Management, or related field) required.
Experience
5-7 years communication, public relations, journalism, or related experience required.
Healthcare and/or corporate experience preferred, including roles with agencies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment.
Business acumen and leadership skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively interact with all levels of management, internal departments, and external agencies.
Working knowledge of various computer software applications.
