Executive Commerce Director, WIRED
Location: New York, NY
Executive Director, WIRED is a key managerial role in the Consumer Marketing organization, reporting to the VP of Commerce. The role will develop the overarching commerce strategy for WIRED in tech, home and lifestyle to meet ambitious growth targets and identify and launch new consumer‑facing e‑commerce experiences. The leader will disrupt the current affiliate e‑commerce model to build incremental revenue and will lead a dedicated team of writers, editors, and producers while working closely with editorial, product marketing, data analytics, advertising, engineering, video, and design teams.
Primary Responsibilities
Identify and execute business opportunities and net new consumer experiences that disrupt the current affiliate mode and create a direct‑to‑consumer checkout experience.
Ensure all commerce content is exceptional in quality, brand voice, and consumer engagement.
Build a direct audience for WIRED across newsletter, social, and other mediums and grow revenue from these channels.
Develop a differentiated commerce proposition that adds value for readers, partners, and the WIRED brand.
Improve repeat engagement on commerce content.
Work on new product features, including integrating commerce into the WIRED App.
Drive macro‑level commerce innovation by identifying, incubating, and launching entirely new revenue streams.
Partner with product and audience teams for comprehensive content and site audits, identify friction points, and execute end‑to‑end optimizations of the on‑site e‑commerce experience.
Represent the Commerce division as the lead negotiator in high‑stakes, enterprise‑level discussions.
Structure and secure deep strategic alliances, white‑label partnerships, and exclusive, multi‑year contracts with tier‑one retailers (e.g., Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart).
Identify the long‑term strategic direction for WIRED brands, communicate the vision, and develop business plans to deliver growth targets.
Evaluate how current strategies align with evolving market conditions, benchmark brands vs competitors and other proxy brands.
Collaborate with editorial, advertising, and data teams to provide a unified WIRED experience and identify broader strategic partnership opportunities.
Propose ideas to scale data, analytics, and product functions to optimize commerce revenue.
Use insights to inform content strategy and monetization on complex issues, leveraging executive presence to influence decisions and drive solutions.
Manage people to maximize team and organization priorities, focusing on change management aligned with Condé Nast values.
Partner with Data Insights, Product, and Editorial leadership to implement action plans against headwinds and growth opportunities.
Collaborate to maximize all go‑to‑market commerce activity including newsletter, social media, paid campaigns, and events.
Demonstrate a nuanced understanding of the product recommendation ecosystem across search, social, newsletter, and video.
Define best practices to reach and engage the target audience.
Plan and execute weekly, seasonal, and tentpole content calendars that capitalize on SEO opportunities and business insights.
Synthesize purchasing data, consumer trends, and competitive analysis to inform editorial decisions that drive key commerce KPIs and revenue growth.
Work closely with editorial, advertising, engineering, video, and design teams to push forward commerce initiatives.
Identify new opportunities for content category growth and assign categories to meet revenue goals.
Manage profit, including revenue and personnel costs.
Mentor, educate, and develop staff.
Recommend effective processes and procedures to improve workflow and results.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
Best‑in‑class execution from ideation to completion with deep understanding of the WIRED brand.
Strong understanding of content‑driven commerce.
15+ years of dedicated content and commerce experience, including scaling a business.
Experience overseeing direct email marketing strategies to maximize audience engagement and lifetime value.
Experience running a direct‑to‑consumer business, managing first‑party data and direct email marketing.
Experience building a content‑commerce business off‑platform on social.
Proven vendor and partner relationship management with a commercial viewpoint.
Team management and at least 5 years of leadership experience.
Comfortable with revenue forecasting and planning.
Ability to communicate with and present to senior executives, translating company priorities into actionable goals.
History of fostering and sustaining a diverse and inclusive team, with expertise in mentorship.
Strong organizational skills, excellent attention to detail, and ability to juggle multiple priorities.
Knowledge of best‑in‑class SEO best practices.
Ability to size business opportunities and leverage data to influence everyday priorities to meet revenue goals.
Required experience working in Google Sheets.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $195,000 – $205,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates may also be eligible to receive discretionary bonus compensation.
