Position Overview

The primary purpose of this position is to lead and implement the strategic vision and plan of the Binding P&C portfolio within Markel Wholesale & Specialty. This role provides leadership, direction and support to underwriting teams and/or direct reports. It is responsible for product profitability, growth and retention of new and renewal business that is consistent with underwriting strategies. Additionally, this role works with Senior and Executive Management, and is accountable for reviewing and evaluating referrals for pricing, coverages, and loss detail in order to underwrite profitable business in the portfolio. The role involves developing and maintaining productive relationships within assigned UW segments; product line management; Senior/Executive Management; Business Development and shared service functions.

Responsibilities

  • Support the product line leaders in the analysis of coverage and contract language based on industry accepted policy forms.
  • Serve as a knowledge expert on industry trends related to binding products, assisting product line leaders in making recommendations on product design, price and development efforts, and supporting binding strategy execution.
  • Analyze monthly trends within the portfolio to support product line objectives.
  • Manage the portfolio to achieve profit, revenue, loss ratio, and expense targets.
  • Ensure effective execution of best practices.
  • Provide coaching and training for underwriting staff based on results of underwriting audit review.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal resources (Actuarial, Product Development, Claim, IT, Operations, Regulatory, etc.) to coordinate services to customers and ensure superior products are delivered to internal and external customers.
  • Exhibit Property and/or Excess underwriting experience.
  • Manage and triage program business within the Binding product line.
  • Participate in quarterly portfolio audits as required.
  • Collaborate closely with four regional underwriting teams to communicate and execute product line strategy.
  • Represent the binding product line to internal and external customers when required.
  • Travel expectation 25-35%.

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of casualty underwriting experience.
  • Insurance designations preferred but not required.
  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field from an accredited university/college.
  • Strong interpersonal and management skills, with effective communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent problem solving/decision making abilities.

Compensation

The base salary is based on compensable factors such as job‑relevant education, experience, training, licensure, competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Director, Underwriting is $162,800 - $223,800 with a 55% incentive target, and for Sr. Director, Underwriting is $188,800 - $259,000 with a 55% incentive target.
