Job Description
Title: Elementary Media Specialist

Department: Support Staff

Building/Facility: Individual Building (Ashville Elementary)

Reports to: Principal

Description: The Elementary Media Specialist maintains the media center for students and staff, providing students with skills necessary to access information in any media center. Responsibilities include troubleshooting equipment, maintaining the media center collection, patron records, ordering materials, and managing the budget.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ensure safety of students, taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Assist students and teachers in the proper selection and utilization of library materials.

Assist students and teachers with computer and reference materials.

Assist students in selecting and checking out books.

Cancel outdated or damaged library material.

Check and clean media center equipment.

Compile teacher request for media center materials.

Instruct students in the proper use of the media center.

Maintain accurate records of all media center equipment, materials and supplies.

Maintain a procedure for checkout, return, and reshelving of all library materials.

Maintain media center records, e.g., overdue books, equipment records, and book circulation.

Maintain respect at all times for confidential information.

Perform daily operational duties of the library media center.

Plan and present library learning activities for elementary students.

Repair minor damage to media center materials.

Requisition necessary library materials.

Complete routine processing of books, magazines, and audio-visual materials.

Enter all new materials into computer.

Issue overdue notices to homerooms.

Prepare and keep track of audiovisual equipment for teachers and classroom use.

Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation.

Reinforce positive attitudes and behaviors during library class.

Demonstrate sound judgement and emotional stability.

Demonstrate a positive attitude and work and communicate well with others.

Knowledge

Knowledge of children’s books, authors, and illustrators.

Knowledge of audiovisual equipment used in an elementary school setting.

Skills

Skilled in organizing and problem-solving.

Skilled in active listening by giving full attention, asking questions, and not interrupting inappropriately.

Skilled in computer and technology services.

Skilled in speaking with others to convey information efficiently.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or general education degree (GED)

One to two years related experience

Appropriate certification/license from the Ohio Department of Education

Must hold ESEA qualified endorsement

Satisfactory completion of BCI and FBI background check

Physical Demands

Required to have dexterity of hands and fingers.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Required to stand or sit for extended periods of time.

Regularly required to bend at the waist, kneel, crouch, reach, climb and stretch with hands and arms.

Required to report to work on all scheduled workdays.

Frequently required to push, pull, lift, or carry various supplies and materials up to a maximum of 25 pounds.

Frequent repetitive hand motion, e.g., typing, computer work.

Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.

Occasional interaction among unruly children.

Occasionally required to speak and hear.
