Kraken is a technology company focused on creating a smart, sustainable energy system, powering renewables, smart grids, and AI‑driven experiences.
We’re looking for a Head of UX who can scale design craft, lead a global team, and shape the UX vision in an AI‑first organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and evolve Kraken’s design system as the single source of truth across product lines, including tokens, variants, accessibility, AI patterns, and customer journeys.
- Define what “great” UX means at Kraken and set standards for interaction, content, research, accessibility, and storytelling.
- Lead, level‑up, and inspire a global crew of designers, researchers, and design‑systems specialists; grow manager‑of‑managers relationships and foster a critique culture.
- Shape product bets, influence priorities, and co‑create strategy with Product and Engineering; stop solutions that hurt user experience.
- Develop an AI‑first organization: define design roles in an AI‑augmented context, drive adoption of design‑to‑code workflows, identify boundaries between human‑led, AI‑assisted, and fully automated UX, and evolve research practices for AI‑driven experiences.
- Develop research engines that provide actionable insights through continuous discovery and triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data.
- Scale design operations, rituals, tooling, and playbooks without unnecessary bureaucracy.
Requirements
- 8–12+ years in UX/Product Design with senior leadership experience in high‑growth SaaS or tech scale‑up settings.
- Portfolio demonstrating systems thinking, principled decisions, and business impact, not just UI polish.
- Proven experience owning and scaling a design system, including adoption battles, legacy migrations, developer partnership, and governance.
- Hands‑on use of AI tools in design and product workflows (prototyping, UI generation, research synthesizing, content generation).
- Ability to evolve design team responsibilities in an AI‑enabled environment.
- Experience designing AI‑powered products (conversational interfaces, copilots, agent‑based systems, workflow automation).
- Strong understanding of human‑AI interaction design, trust, transparency, and control.
- Familiarity with design‑to‑code and automated frontend workflows and their impact on team velocity.
Bonus Points
- Experience in complex or regulated industries such as energy, fintech, government, or healthcare.
- Track record of evangelising UX to executives and boards.
- Building inclusive design cultures that foster belonging, ambition, curiosity, and joy.
- Experience with global product localisation and cultural design patterns; accessibility beyond WCAG.
Salary
For NYC candidates, the salary range for this role is approximately $190,000 – $240,000, depending on experience and fit.
