Reporting to the Performing Arts Theatre Manager/Technical Director or other assigned supervisor, technicians are responsible for the lighting, sound/ video, rigging, and stage management needs of a variety of theater, opera, meeting, choral, music concert, dance, variety shows, and other college and outside rental events at Antelope Valley Community College.
Lighting
Set up and operate theatrical/stage lighting equipment, including hanging and focusing, circuiting, cabling, and operating a spot during rehearsals and performances.
Create and maintain a house light plot and basic light plot with three‑color wash and specials.
Ensure lighting equipment is clean and in proper working condition.
Read and adapt light plots provided by producers and restore the house plot as needed.
Design and implement lighting for a variety of events.
Operate a variety of lighting consoles and write cues into the board.
Provide the house light plot and instrument inventory to producers.
Order expendables and other materials needed for theater lighting operations.
Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance on equipment used.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Sound / Video
Set up sound reinforcement, including microphones, cable, and monitors, for rehearsals and performances.
Operate sound/video equipment and playback; write cues and record events as necessary.
Operate a mixing console to maintain appropriate audio levels (including the Meyer Acoustic system).
Operate a projector for screenings and presentations.
Coordinate and provide sound/video related services for activities.
Ensure that audio equipment is in proper working condition for assigned performances/events.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Flyman / Rigger
Coordinate and direct the safe set‑up, installation, use, and maintenance of rigging equipment, including the J.R. Clancy Scenic Control fly system.
Coordinate and direct the delivery, set‑up, operation, dismantling, and striking of rigging equipment needed for scheduled events.
Rig all scenery and operate the fly rail.
Hang points, call bridles, and tie knots.
Hang soft goods and hard set pieces.
Operate rigging equipment during load‑ins, shows, and load‑outs.
Assist outside company riggers to install and strike equipment.
Identify any additional rigging equipment that may be required.
Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance on equipment used.
Always adhere to safety standards for rigging equipment and use safe working methods.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Stage Manager
Manage stage operations to ensure smooth and efficient rehearsals and performance execution.
Assist in coordinating and directing the work of technical crew, set‑up, strike, and work assignments.
Act as a liaison between the various crews involved backstage.
Coordinate, oversee, and/or direct the set‑up of stages.
Record blocking, lighting cues, prop usage, costume changes, and performer entrances during rehearsals.
Make dressing room assignments.
Create and maintain metrics reports for each work call.
Communicate with the front‑of‑house manager regarding house open, show start, and resumption of show after intermission.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Level 1: Any combination of experience and/or education equal to a minimum of 1 to 2 years of theatrical experience in the field of expertise.
Level 2: Any combination of experience and/or education equal to a minimum of 3 to 5 years of theatrical experience in the field of expertise.
Level 3: Any combination of experience and/or education equal to a minimum of more than 5 years of theatrical experience in the field of expertise.
Knowledge of
Terminology, methods, practices, and techniques in the specific area of expertise (lighting, sound, flyman/rigger, and/or stage management) with emphasis on live events.
Hanging and focusing instruments; programming cues into lighting boards and other lighting design practices.
Appropriate backstage health, safety, and operational standards.
Ability to
Follow established backstage health, safety, and operational practices and procedures.
Manage time effectively and handle workload accurately and efficiently.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Advise and interact effectively with technical and non‑technical workers, faculty, students, outside renters, and volunteers.
Cross‑train in other Theatre Tech assignments.
Work with frequent interruptions while maintaining strong detail orientation, flexibility, and adaptability under varied conditions and requirements, and remain composed during time pressures.
Work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required by performance schedules.
Physical Effort
Ability to walk, climb, stand, reach, pull, lift 50 lbs., bend and twist.
Maintain effective audio‑visual discrimination and perception for communication.
Sit or stand for extended periods of time.
