Primary Purpose

To teach high school and middle school band students in classes assigned by the head high school band director, provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities, create an atmosphere in the band program that encourages students’ continued growth and development, and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL) and district requirements.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s Degree, with appropriate state certification in band.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Possess knowledge of overall operations of an instrumental music program; demonstrate strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on strong, healthy teacher/student and teacher/parent relationships; possess knowledge of state and UIL policies governing orchestra; other alternatives may be acceptable to administration.

Experience:

Three years of teaching and band directing experience preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Maintain UIL quality standards for all performing groups assigned.

Exhibit high level of expertise in teaching middle school instrument classes, with an emphasis on proper fundamentals.

Assist with middle school instrumental performers, including concert band, soloists, and ensembles.

Work with the HS director on the creation and implementation of a comprehensive cluster recruiting plan.

Schedule and direct consistent before and after school sectionals and rehearsals.

Create an atmosphere in the band program that encourages students’ continued growth and development, and inspire desire for continued participation.

Provide band participation at extracurricular events including concerts, football games, pep rallies, and UIL activities.

Ensure appropriate student participation in TMEA All Region auditions, All City Bands, and solo and ensemble contests.

Judge at all appropriate district, region, and TMEA events.

Implement federal, state, UIL, and board policies regarding band.

Obtain and use evaluative findings, including student achievement data, to assess program effectiveness and ensure continual renewal responsive to student needs.

Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the student handbook.

Establish open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.

Ensure programs are cost effective and funds well-managed.

Assist with recommending policies to improve the program.

Maintain consistent attendance.

Attend regular cluster staff meetings to discuss curriculum alignment and teaching methods.

Write reports and communicate effectively in writing.

Perform other duties as assigned.
