Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is a veteran service organization dedicated to supporting wounded veterans and their families. The Vice President – Communications leads organization‑wide communication strategies to raise awareness, strengthen brand equity, and advance WWP’s mission. The role reports to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Integration:
Develop and execute comprehensive communications and awareness strategies aligned with WWP’s mission and long‑term objectives; partner with marketing, fundraising, programs, and other departments to deliver cohesive messaging; lead crisis communications and reputation management.
Integrated Content Strategy & Digital Communications:
Design and implement a content strategy that includes editorial planning, governance, audience segmentation, and performance measurement; oversee owned and earned channels (newsroom, SEO, social media) to maximize reach and visibility.
Media Relations & Thought Leadership:
Build and maintain relationships with national and regional media, influencers, and thought leaders; support the development of WWP’s thought‑leadership strategy and manage speaker bureau, op‑eds, and external messaging.
Team Leadership & Operations:
Lead, mentor, and develop the communications team; manage budget, agency and vendor relationships, technology platforms, and content production resources; establish KPIs and measurement frameworks.
Organizational Responsibilities:
Ensure all communications comply with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards; contribute to senior leadership discussions; represent WWP at conferences and public events.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Proven success in integrated marketing and communications strategy development.
Expertise in crisis communications planning and execution.
Strategic thinker with disciplined execution, capable of translating vision into action.
Strong leadership and cross‑functional team management experience; experience in matrixed organizations.
Advanced knowledge of digital marketing, SEO, CMS, and social media platforms.
Proficiency with analytics platforms and content management tools.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, adept at crafting clear narratives.
High emotional intelligence and cultural competency, particularly sensitivity to military and veteran experiences.
Experience managing budgets, vendor relationships, and agency partnerships.
Passion for mission‑driven work and authentic storytelling.
Commitment to highest ethical standards.
Experience
Ten years of progressively responsible communications experience.
Eight years of senior leadership experience.
Preference for experience in nonprofit and/or veteran services sector environments.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field.
Master’s degree preferred.
Certifications & Licensure
Valid state‑issued driver’s license.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
A general office environment with temperature control. Up to 25% travel. Hybrid work schedule: three days in the office and two days remote.
Compensation
Estimated salary range begins at $200,000 annual base plus eligibility for an annual performance incentive.
