At The RealReal, our Product Design team is dedicated to creating seamless, highly engaging, and aesthetically elevated e-commerce experiences that redefine luxury consignment. As we continue to scale our core marketplace and enhance our customer journey, we are introducing the Director, UX Design & Research role to lead our design strategy across all digital touchpoints.
What You Get To Do Everyday
- Define and drive the overarching UI/UX vision and strategy for The RealReal’s global web and mobile platforms to ensure an intuitive, accessible, and high‑converting customer experience.
- Manage, mentor, and inspire a high‑performing team of UX/UI designers and researchers, fostering a culture of design excellence and continuous learning.
- Partner closely with Product Management, Engineering, Marketing, Branding, and Merchandising leaders to translate business objectives into customer‑centric design solutions that drive revenue, retention, and loyalty.
- Establish and govern scalable design systems to ensure visual consistency, accessibility (WCAG standards), and workflow efficiency across desktop, mobile web, and native apps.
- Direct user research, usability testing, and data analysis initiatives, translating qualitative insights and quantitative metrics into actionable product design roadmaps.
- Lead the end‑to‑end design lifecycle for major strategic initiatives, from conceptual wireframes and prototyping to high‑fidelity visual design and engineering handoff.
- Advocate for the user experience at the executive level, clearly presenting design concepts, roadmap progress, and the ROI of UX to cross‑functional stakeholders.
Minimum Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in UI/UX or product design, with a strong focus on high‑traffic B2C e‑commerce, retail, or marketplace platforms.
- 3+ years of experience managing and scaling high‑performing product design teams in an agile environment.
- Proven ability to establish, scale, and maintain comprehensive design systems across multiple platforms (web, iOS, Android).
- Demonstrated expertise in user‑centered design methodologies, advanced prototyping, and UX research, backed by a portfolio of high‑impact, conversion‑focused work.
- Proficiency with industry‑standard design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma) and a deep understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG) and responsive design.
- Proven ability to partner with and effectively influence cross‑functional leadership across Product, Engineering, and Business teams.
- Ability to travel as needed, up to 10%.
Preferred Requirements
- Direct experience designing for luxury fashion, the circular economy, or two‑sided marketplace dynamics.
- Experience championing the adoption of AI‑based design tools, workflows, and personalization engines.
- Strong familiarity with front‑end technical constraints and capabilities (React, iOS, Android) to ensure seamless design‑to‑engineering handoff.

The expected salary range for this role is $224,760.00-$260,000.00. To determine starting pay we carefully consider a variety of factors, including primary work location and an evaluation of a candidate’s skills, experience, market demands, and internal parity. Additionally, salary is just one component of TRR’s total rewards package. Depending on role, employees may also be eligible for a bonus program, incentive pay and benefits.
