Seattle Today is a start-up local newspaper and media platform focused on telling the stories that shape our city. We bring together reporting, multimedia, and community voices to highlight the issues, people, and cultures that make Seattle a unique place.

Our community-driven journalism combines reporting, digital storytelling, and local business coverage to amplify voices across Seattle’s neighborhoods.

Since its launch, Seattle Today has grown rapidly, building a digital community of over 40,000 followers on Instagram and more than 7,000 on TikTok, making it one of the fastest-growing local media voices in the region.

Position Summary
Seattle Today is seeking a creative and motivated Communications associate to join our newsroom.

This program is designed for aspiring journalists, storytellers, and digital creators who want real newsroom experience covering Seattle.

The role focuses on producing engaging multimedia content, supporting storytelling across digital platforms, and helping grow Seattle Today’s presence across the metropolitan area.

The ideal candidate understands social media storytelling, has experience filming short-form video content, and is passionate about highlighting local businesses, people, and culture.

Weekly Duties & Responsibilities
Content Creation

Capture and produce engaging social media content including videos, stories, and graphics aligned with Seattle Today’s mission

Shoot short‑form video content for platforms such as Instagram Reels, TikTok, and Facebook

Write captions, assist with editing visuals, and help manage content calendars

Co‑Editing & Production

Assist with video editing, photography, and story preparation

Help prepare multimedia content for publication across social platforms and the Seattle Today website

Community Engagement

Engage with audiences through comments and messages when appropriate

Support interaction with local businesses, entrepreneurs, and community members featured in our coverage

Compensation & Time Commitment
Time Commitment: Part‑time, approximately 5 hours per week

Location: In‑person (Seattle)

Associates will conduct interviews, capture video, and produce content in person on Wednesdays and Thursdays at our downtown office or other news‑related locations across Seattle.

Duration: 10 weeks

Compensation: $1,050 stipend

Required Qualifications

Strong alignment with Seattle Today’s mission to tell authentic local stories

Familiarity with social media platforms, particularly Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook

Experience filming and editing short‑form video content

Basic proficiency with editing tools such as CapCut, Adobe Premiere, iMovie, or Canva

Strong writing, communication, and visual storytelling skills

Comfortable appearing on camera and engaging with the public

Ability to commit to the internship schedule

Current students are not eligible for this role. Applicants must have completed their studies and be available for a professional work schedule

Applicants should provide 2–3 examples of digital content they have created.

Examples may include:

Social media posts or reels

Written articles

Photography or multimedia storytelling

Desired Qualifications

Experience creating digital content for media, journalism, marketing, or nonprofit organizations

Understanding of how to grow social media engagement and audience reach

Interest in pursuing a career in journalism, communications, digital media, or storytelling

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is passionate about media, communications, and storytelling and is eager to gain hands‑on experience in a dynamic newsroom environment.

The ideal candidate should not be currently enrolled as a student.

They should be comfortable filming content in public settings, speaking on camera, and conducting short interviews with local business owners, community members, and public figures.

Candidates should also enjoy producing short‑form videos that highlight Seattle’s culture, entrepreneurship, and community life.

This role is ideal for individuals looking to build a professional portfolio in journalism and digital media while contributing to a growing local newsroom.
