Position Overview

The College of Performing Arts at The New School is seeking a highly qualified Overhire Scenic Artist to support its Performance Operations – Scenic Department. The role involves completing and finishing scenic builds as delegated by the Scenic Charge Artist and Production Shops Manager. This is an overhire position without guaranteed weekly hours; opportunities are scheduled as needed. The position may be renewed pending institutional needs and funding availability.
Core Capabilities, Primary Duties, and Responsibilities

Serve as a painter to assist the Scenic Charge Artist with tasks as needed.
Carry out duties assigned by the Scenic Charge Artist or Production Shops Manager.
Maintain a clean paint area in the prop shop and clean up at the end of each day.
Work alongside carpenters for space management and build completion.
Apply painting techniques to scenery.
Ensure proper fire retardancy is added to paint and scenery as required by the Production Shops Manager.
Complete additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Familiarity with theatrical painting techniques.
Comfortable working independently and asking for clarification when needed.
Ability to read a scale rule.
Experience as a theatrical scenic painter.
Work Mode

This position is primarily in‑person on campus to support effective collaboration. Some weekend and weeknight work may be scheduled as required by production tech schedules.
Hourly Rate

$30.00 per hour.
