The GLBT Historical Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that collects, preserves, exhibits and makes accessible to the public materials and knowledge to support and promote understanding of LGBTQ history, culture, and arts in all their diversity. Founded in 1985, we are recognized internationally as a leader in the field of LGBTQ public history. We steward and make accessible one of the world’s largest repositories of LGBT historical materials through our archives, and we operate the nation’s first museum of LGBT History and Culture in San Francisco.
Position Description
The Director of Development and Communications will lead fundraising efforts and communicate our mission to stakeholders. The role reports to the Executive Director and supervises the Development Associate and the Marketing and Communications Manager. The Director will develop comprehensive fundraising strategies, cultivate donor relationships, oversee grant writing, and manage capital campaign planning. The position also shapes the organization’s communications strategy, oversees brand consistency, and leads a multi‑year capital campaign.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, refine, and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies and annual plans to achieve revenue goals.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director, Board, Program Directors, and Volunteer fundraisers to identify and cultivate relationships with individual donors, corporate sponsors, foundations, and government agencies.
- Oversee grant writing, reporting, and compliance with funder requirements.
- Supervise staff who plan and execute fundraising events, auctions, and campaigns, including the annual gala.
- Monitor fundraising performance, report progress to staff and the Board of Directors.
- Manage donor database and fundraising software; ensure accurate data entry, acknowledgment letters, and stewardship communications.
- Develop and implement strategies to recognize and acknowledge donor contributions.
- Provide leadership, supervision, and guidance to staff and volunteers; support board fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship efforts.
- Serve on the Society’s leadership team, and collaborate with other departments.
- Work with capital campaign consultants to plan and execute a multi‑year campaign.
- Foster a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and equity in all fundraising efforts.
Qualifications
- Minimum seven years of fundraising experience in the nonprofit sector, with director-level experience preferred.
- Three years of staff supervision experience preferred.
- Proven track record of developing and implementing successful fundraising strategies and meeting revenue targets.
- Proficiency in budget management and experience with fundraising software and donor databases; Salesforce experience is preferred. Strong computer skills in Windows, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace are required.
- Excellent writing and communication skills, ability to craft compelling messages for diverse audiences.
- Excellent leadership, supervision, and team‑building skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment; strong time‑management and multi‑project coordination skills.
- Commitment to and experience working with LGBTQ+ and diverse communities; proven record of advancing justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.

- Lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Sit or stand for extended periods.
Position Details
- Salary: $120,000 annually, Full Time, Exempt.

- Work schedule may include evenings or weekends; hybrid remote and in‑person with occasional onsite visits to San Francisco within 1‑2 hours’ notice.
