Overview
Area Director I – Lead in developing a team in the area to carry out Young Life’s mission of introducing kids to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith.
Responsibilities
Through spiritual leadership and proper management, the Area Director I will guide the area team in spiritual development, leadership development, resource development, direct ministry, and ministry support.
Ministry Functions
Spiritual Development
— “Following Jesus” includes prayer, spiritual disciplines, fellowship, growth, health, and church relationships. Develop a yearly personal growth plan that fosters a vibrant spiritual life, including solitude, retreat, reflection, and prayer. Maintain relationships and disciplines within a church community. Actively participate in the spiritual life of the Young Life community. Lead teams and individuals in spiritual development, ensuring ministry is driven by personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Leadership Development
— “Equipping leaders, committee and staff” includes key volunteer care, recruiting, team building, training, supervision, and vision casting. Partner with the Regional Director and Committee to cast vision for reaching every kid. Organize gatherings with committee, leaders, and staff to build unity. Create a spiritual leadership plan for volunteers, staff, and committee members. Recruit, train, and supervise area staff. Provide resources and support for summer camps and other activities.
Resource Development
— “Fueling the ministry” involves events, major donor care, public relations, and the TDS team. Lead the TDS team and committee in finding partners for the area vision and budget. Develop a fundraising strategy and ensure communication excellence to donors. Raise funds to sustain ministry operations and maintain a minimum one‑month cash reserve. Build the Young Life brand through effective public relations.
Direct Ministry
— “Proclaiming and modeling” involves contact work, club, Campaigners, and camping. Actively engage at all three levels of contact work. Lead or co‑lead a model Young Life club; oversee an effective Campaigner ministry. Evaluate local schools and ministries yearly, develop and implement plans to maximize Gospel proclamation, and serve on summer assignments at Young Life properties.
Ministry Support
— “Taking care of business” includes accounting, administration, communication, data management, and strategic planning. Adhere to all policies, maintain professionalism, manage finances with stewardship, accountability, and transparency. Keep accurate records of kids, leaders, and donors. Communicate clearly and professionally. Set strategic ministry plans and initiatives and review them regularly. Perform other duties as assigned that align with gifts, experience, and area needs.
Training
Participation in the mission‑wide staff conference every four years, additional training such as the TDS training, regional training directives, and pursuit of continuing education including graduate degrees and seminars to enhance professional skills.
Working Conditions
Include extremes of camp assignments (heat/cold, dirt, long hours, hiking, horseback riding, boating, etc.). Staff must handle these physical demands.
Education
College degree preferred.
Qualifications
Completed Core Training—Phase One
Proven leadership skills
Proven relational skills with both kids and adults
A call to reach kids with the Gospel
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Required Faith Statement
Must profess a belief in Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord and subscribe to the Young Life Statement of Faith.
